New asylum applications up 29% in first quarter; 63% more family reunification requests

Almost 9,000 people submitted their first asylum application in the Netherlands in the first quarter of 2024, an increase of 29 percent compared to the same quarter a year earlier. The number of family reunification requests was 62 percent higher at 3,100, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported on Wednesday based on the latest figures from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND).

Netherlands has fourth highest GDP per resident in Europe

Last year, the Netherlands’ gross domestic product (GDP) per inhabitant was 57,800 euros. That is the fourth highest in the European Union and nearly 1.5 times higher than the EU average of 38,000 euros per resident, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and Eurostat.

Home prices in Netherlands increased over 5% in March

The average owner-occupied home cost 432,061 euros in the Netherlands in March, 5.4 percent more expensive than in the same month last year, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and the Land Registry reported. Prices rose by 0.7 percent in March compared to February.

Quarter of parents don't use all their parental leave: Benefits Agency

Over a quarter of employed parents don’t make full use of the 9 weeks of parental leave each new parent has been entitled to since August 2022. Mothers only take an average of 6.9 weeks of leave and fathers 6.2 weeks. Mothers are also still twice as likely as fathers to take parental leave, RTL Nieuws reports based on figures from benefits agency UWV and employability specialist Robidus.
