CAPE TOWN – Two firefighters are recovering in hospital after they were injured fighting a raging wildfire outside Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.
The blaze in the Jonkershoek Valley had already burnt through more than 8,000 hectares of vegetation – with the flames fanned by strong winds.

CAPE TOWN – Two firefighters are recovering in hospital after they were injured fighting a raging wildfire outside Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.

Rescuers use GPS to find lost hikers

On Thursday, 20 August, Stellenbosch Fire and Rescue Services responded to an incident where two youngsters were reported lost on the Coetzenberg mountain.
According to a statement by municipal spokesperson, Stuart Grobbelaar, the youngsters decided to take a hike and were overcome by the fog and became disorientated. GPS co-ordinates were exchanged and fire fighters drove with a 4x4 vehicle as far as the mountainous terrain allowed them after which they walked another hour.
