The National Road Carriers Association is calling for an "urgent review" of the
state highway network as consultation begins to reassess speed limits on nearly two-thirds of Northland's state highways.
Speed limits on 626km – 64
per cent - of the 978km of roading the Government's transport agency maintains across the region could be slashed as part of sweeping nationwide changes to reduce the road death toll.

Speed limits on 11 highways in Auckand and Northland to be reviewed

"We’re working to deliver a safe system which acknowledges that even responsible people can make mistakes on our roads, and that these mistakes should not cost us our lives,” he said.
Nine state highways in Northland and two state highways in Auckland are being reviewed after being identified as roads where safer speed limits could make a difference in preventing deaths and serious injuries.
The highways being reviewed have been identified as roads where lower speeds could help save lives.
“Even when speed isn’t the direct cause of a crash, it is the single biggest factor that determines whether a person is killed, seriously injured or walks away from a crash unharmed,” Mutton said.

Local Matters - NZTA seeking feedback on State Highway speed review

NZTA seeking feedback on State Highway speed review
NZTA says the focus on making safer roads for all is evident in the current programme of works for Northland and into Auckland, such as the Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway.
Speed limit reductions could be on the cards for the region’s two State Highways as a result of a review being carried out by the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) in Northland and Rodney this year.
Over the next couple of months, NZTA will be organising community information sessions to get feedback from local people on State Highway 1, from Warkworth to Whangarei, and State Highway 16, from Wellsford to Waimauku.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has hailed safety improvements on SH1 black spots as lifesavers after a dramatic drop in fatalities on the busy stretch of Northland road.
Centreline bollards, a half metre wide centreline with yellow no passing lines, and raised reflectors were installed on SH1 between Toetoe Rd in Otaika and Springfield Rd in Oakleigh in June 2018.
