a country reeling from the shootings and years of divisive politics. but in the long run, how much will it matter? there is a dark side to what happened in tucson, and a very dark side. and sarah palin says there are a record number of death threats against her since the arizona shootings, and palin's security is looking to step up the security, and this is ugly and begs the question of what we are becoming in this country. here is the question then, will the tucson massacre change the tone of the political debate in this country. >> let's hope so. go cnn.com/caffertyfile. >> we hope so, too, jack. shooting suspect jared loughner behaved so strangely at his community college that faculty and students alerted the police. they demanded he get a mental health evaluation. so what can be done to prevent another tragedy like what happened in tucson?
want to be in the medical aspect of it but to stay with her emotional needs. i stayed with her and travelled with her in the ambulance while trying to comfort her and letting her know that we would get a hold of her husband and family here in tucson. >> did you ever worry about your own personal safety in those critical moments? >> i didn't even think about that. because at the time the only concern was trying to make sure that those who had been injured were being treated. to the best of my ability, but also making sure that those who had indeed been hit, got attention even it was not from me, so at no point did i think that the gunman was still active. >> daniel, tell us how this has changed your life? >> well, i think that if anything, this is really made me kind of have a passion for public service. because people like congresswoman giffords and gabe
shooting? that is friday night, susan? >> yes. police tell us that he was staying at a motel 6. they are not describing exactly which one, and there are several in the area. but, investigators found evidence directly linking him to the motel. now, as to why he would have been there is pure speculation at this part. and of course, various things that police are looking at is was he putting together the final stages of the plan there? did he have some of to guns or the magazines he was preparing? pure speculation, and they don't know. there are a lot of theories that are possibilities at this point. >> all right. susan, thank you very much. excellent reporting as usual. a new surge of pain for tucson as the funerals begin for the victims of last saturday's massacre. the service for judge john roll gets under way an hour from now, and the chief federal judge for arizona devoted his entire career to public service. he leaves behind a wife and three sons and five grandchildren. hundreds of mourners attended

the office, saying yesterday representative giffords' colleagues on both sides of the aisle honor her and mourn those lost and the speaker was here on the house. he was passionate and remorseful and sad when he delivered the remarks yesterday, holding back tears, john boehner, as you saw, roland. >> i certainly understand the obligation that he had in the house. the issue for me is not really him accepting the president's invitati invitation. i thought it would have been important for the country to see president barack obama, to see speaker john boehner walk nothing that memorial service for the people of tucson, for the state of arizona, for the country, because it would have symbolized something that's very important. so, i understand what the house did, but i do think he should have been there to be able to say, look, we as a nation are united. also, he is not the republican leader of the house. he is the speaker of the house over the entire house. i do think he certainly should
protection for the u.s. lawmakers in their home districts has become more urgent following the shootings in tucson. we go to our homeland security correspondent jeanne meserve. what are you learning? >> well, wolf, surveillance cameras and peepholes and panic buttons are the sorts of things that members of congress are now considering for the district offices in light of the shootings in tucson. >> well, it is a little cold out there, right? >> reporter: maryland congressman is a gregarious guy who loves glad handing with the public. it is part of his job. but threats are part of it, too. >> we get threats all of the kind. >> what kind? >> well, threats that if you don't do this, he won't wake up tomorrow. and we don't like who he is or what he is. he is gone. >> reporter: rupersberger
sanjay is joining us now from tucson. did he tell you about the condition of his wife? >> well, you know, he confirmed at love t t lolot of the things heard about the eye opening, and significant, and he said he was obviously there at the time. he talked about the fact that she was able to start a little bit of therapy today and had the legs dangling over the side and some of that we heard, and the breathing tube is still in as well. he said that it could come out as early as tomorrow, and might be in another week, but doctors are sort of trying to decide how the proceed. wolf, he was in houston when he found out and at the time he found out none of it had been in the news. he received a call from congresswoman giffords' chief of staff who told him that he is in a different state, and obviously startling news to hear, and he is a pilot and able to get an airplane and was here in arizona within 45 minutes he said, right
