I'VE just sent this to Cllr Ferrari of Dorset Council, and the MP whose support is vital: I strongly urge Dorset Council to seek funding for the Eden Portland project. This remarkable scheme has already passed major hurdles with flying colours. 'Exciting' is a much-used word, but in this context that is certainly what Eden Portland is. YOBS desecrated an ancient church and 'pirate graveyard' on Portland - leading to fury from civic leaders who have slammed them as 'feral.' Excrement and the remains of a campfire were found at 12th century St Andrew's Church, while a stone from a historic wall had been ripped out and smashed up. The ruin is set near picturesque Church Ope Cove and is the subject of local folklore - described by one local historian as "a truly romantic place in a tranquil setting." Shops lined both sides of this long narrow street from end to end. This photo comes from the wonderful book Portland Then and Now by historian Stuart Morris.  Now we can compare this photo with a more recent but not up to date photo of Portland. This photo shows the gaps in the street frontage left by Second World War bomb damage. Between the old and new pictures the Mere (old) has changed from natural salt water shallows to a fuel tank farm, then a major helicopter base, and now is the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.
