Herd of wild elephants kills elderly man in Koderma district | Ranchi News


Koderma: A herd of wild elephants trampled a 65-year-old man to death in Kheskari village under Jainagar police station limits of Koderma district late on Monday night. The man, identified as Khalil Khan, was found dead on Tuesday morning.
Divisional forest officer Suraj Kumar Singh said, “The herd of 24 elephants, which has been roaming in the area for over two months, had ventured into the hamlet late on Monday night. Khan was among the band of locals who emerged from their homes to drive the herd away. He soon got separated from the group and had come across the herd, which trampled him.” ....

11 migratory birds found dead in Koderma, poisoning suspected | Ranchi News

Koderma: As many as 11 migratory birds were found dead in Jamukhari under Chandwara police station limits in Koderma, officials said on Monday. “We found a bottle of poison beside the carcasses and we suspect that the birds were poisoned to death by some unidentified poachers,” divisional forest officer Suraj Kumar Singh said. He added, “The dead birds were identified as Eurasian coot, a member of the Rallidae bird family. The carcasses have been sent for a post mortem.”
This is the second incident of bird poaching in Jamukhari in the recent past. Earlier, the forest department found carcasses of 40 birds there. “We have set up an anti-poaching team and our crackdown on poachers will be strengthened further,” Singh said. ....

Foresters seek Rs 43.5 lakh from govt for vulture centre in Koderma | Ranchi News

KODERMA: Foresters in Koderma have sought a vulture conservation centre from the state government in the district. “We have submitted a wildlife management plan to the government where we have asked for Rs 43.5 lakh for setting up the centre,” divisional forest officer Suraj Kumar Singh said on Wednesday.
“The criticality endangered species of vultures, which were spotted in Koderma in the recent past, need to be protected,” Singh said, adding, “A team of researchers will be engaged in studying the population and behaviour of the birds.” He said the team will be sent to Bombay Natural History Society to acquire knowledge on the matter. ....
