Govt hospitals stop taking in new patients | Surat News

Surat: Two of the biggest Covid-19 hospitals in the region — the New Civil Hospital (NCH) and the Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research (SMIMER) — have closed their gates to new patients on Wednesday. This, the administrations attribute to the acute shortage of oxygen supply.
Despite having beds and necessary infra to handle even critical patients, these hospitals have turned their backs on severely infected patients only to avoid a crisis-like situation in managing patients already under treatment there.
Till Monday, many ambulances were bringing in Covid-19 patients round the clock. But with the oxygen crisis taking a sharper turn, the situation has become difficult even for the government hospitals to manage patients, majority of whom arrive requiring urgent oxygen support. Earlier, Indian Medical Association (IMA), Surat, which had sought supply of 230 MT oxygen for government and private hospitals in the city alleged that nearly 20 percent less oxygen was disbursed to the city against earlier supply.

Gujarat hospitals unable to admit patients for want of trained medical staff, oxygen

Ahmedabad's newly-built 900-bed Dhanvantari hospital operates sub-optimally even as patients queue-up
Severe shortage of human resources, coupled with flooding of Covid-19 patients, has thrown hospital infrastructure completely out of gear in most of the towns in Gujarat. At several cities, hospitals have no other option but deny admission to Covid-19 patients owing to shortage of either trained healthcare staff or medical-grade oxygen.
The severity of the ground situation can be gauged from a widely-circulated video from Ahmedabad, where an autorickshaw driver was seen pushing through the barricades at the entrance of newly-set up 900-bed Dhanvantari Covid-19 hospital on Thursday.

Oxygen crisis deepens in Gujarat as Covid cases cross 5 lakh-mark | Vadodara News

"Over 4,000 indoor patients are admitted in 400-odd private hospitals of the city. If the oxygen supply is not restored immediately, hospitals will be forced to discharge patients,” said Dr Nirmal Choraria
VADODARA/SURAT/AHMEDABAD: The spectre of crippling oxygen shortage threatening to snuff out Covid-19 affected lives is looming large in Gujarat. Growing need of gasping Covid-19 patients has rendered 1,000MT availability of the gas insufficient as hospitals across cities and towns reportedly struggled to treat unabated flow of breathless patients.
The state government informed the Gujarat high court on Monday that there are 52,036 Covid patients currently on oxygen support across the state. “With the surge in cases, oxygen demand has risen from 58 MT on March 15 to 1,000 MT on April 24.
