Review: 'Effigy: Poison and the City'

E
ffigy, about a female serial killer in 1828 Germany and the groundbreaking female law clerk tasked with tracking her down, my mind—maybe like yours—pictured a period version of
Killing Eve. Obviously, I was immediately sold. And while this movie turned out to be very different from what I was expecting, it ended up being something that stood beautifully on its own, no comparisons needed.
Effigy is inspired by the true story of Gesche Gottfried (played by Suzan Anbeh), who was found guilty of killing 15 people (and attempting to kill about 20 more), including three husbands, her parents, her children, her brother, and other acquaintances. Elisa Thiemann plays Cato Böhmer, our narrator and a newly hired law clerk in the city at a time when women aren’t even allowed to attend university. She knows what it’s like, then, to be underestimated by the men around her, the very reason why Gottfried has been about to go undetected for so long.

'Effigy: Poison and the City': Film Review | Hollywood Reporter

A modest true-crime tale that prioritizes history over thrills.

Udo Flohr's debut fictionalizes the hunt for the 'Angel of Bremen,' who poisoned 15 people nearly two centuries ago.
Far from the movie viewers may expect when they hear the words "German serial killer,"
Effigy: Poison and the City takes a dignified, old-fashioned approach to homicidal insanity that befits its early-19th century setting. Based on a play by Peer Meter inspired by the crimes of real-life killer Gesche Margarethe Gottfried, aka "the Angel of Bremen," the film reimagines the killer's discovery and capture, using it as an opportunity for a young female law clerk to prove herself to the doubtful men around her. Though clearly made on a tight budget, Udo Flohr's feature debut finds a seriousness to match its unshowy production values, likely endearing it more to history buffs than thriller fans.

A surreal period drama inspired by real events, Udo Flohr’s “Effigy — Poison and the City” dramatizes the multiple deaths surrounding a beautiful widow in 1820s Bremen, Germany.
Wordy and stilted (it was derived from a stage play), this low-budget debut nevertheless benefits from a mesmerizing central performance by Suzan Anbeh as the real-life serial killer, Gesche Gottfried. (None other than Rainer Werner Fassbinder made a film about her in 1972.) Known locally as “The Angel of Bremen,” she feeds the poor and comforts the dying. But when Gesche is suspected of several poisonings, Senator Droste (Christoph Gottschalch) and his whip-smart, pioneering law clerk, Cato Böhmer (an excellent Elisa Thiemann), must investigate.
