TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma is working on a new plan that could make buying a home more affordable. First-time homebuyers have struggled to buy homes in the city due to skyrocketing prices and lower supply.
But city leaders hope the Home in Tacoma project can begin to reverse that trend.
Currently, most of Tacoma’s residential areas are zoned for single-family units, but the project aims to rezone these areas to allow multiple family units, such as duplexes or townhouses, to be built in these areas as well.

Tacoma’s Hilltop has hope for an equitable recovery

But how does recovery happen in a way that doesn’t push out existing residents and businesses?
Crystal T.J. works at The T-shirt Men, a silkscreening shop on MLK Way in Hilltop.
“Growing up, my mom would not really bring us over here," she said. "And now, it’s really transitioned itself into a much more welcoming and safer environment.”
The gang violence that she’s talking about declined dramatically over the years — residents worked hard to make that happen. That created the stable conditions where businesses, including many Black-owned businesses, could thrive. But it also set the table for new investors to come in.

Police in Olympia, Washington, repelled an armed takeover of a Red Lion Hotel by homeless activists Sunday night. Witnesses report they were armed with hatchets, batons, and knives.
At about 11 a.m. Sunday, a group of approximately 45 armed homeless activists forcibly took over the Red Lion Hotel in Olympia, according to a statement from the Olympia Police Department. The violent takeover appears to have been organized by a newly formed group officially identified as Oly Housing Now.
Employees of the Red Lion took shelter in the basement after activists allegedly assaulted one of the staff, police said. Employees called the police and reported being under threat.

Allison Needles: What is a Community Land Trust? And could one help with Tacoma's homelessness crisis?

Dec. 18—When Tacoma Housing Now took over vacant Gault Middle School in November to shelter unhoused people, the action came with a list of demands.
The most prominent of them insisted on making Gault, which has sat vacant for a decade, part of a Community Land Trust, also called a CLT.
That same demand fueled the housing advocacy group to block traffic and pitch a tent in the middle of the intersection on Pacific Avenue and 15th Street on Dec. 8.

'We've seen it work': Tacoma mayor explains why she believes in universal basic income pilot

Tacoma will soon have $600,000 in funding to use on a universal basic income pilot program. The city’s mayor, Victoria Woodards, explained to KIRO Radio’s Gee and Ursula why she thinks that program can work both short and long term.
Part of the funding for the program comes from a $500,000 donation from Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, who handed out a total of $15 million to cities across the country to fund universal basic income pilots. Another $100,000 is courtesy of the Mayors for Guaranteed Income (MGI) group.
Woodards has long pushed for a universal basic income program as one the MGI’s founding members. With funding now in hand, she points to past data from similar pilot programs as proof of how it can and will be effective in Tacoma.
