the biggest threat is the -- just to the east of the outer banks, there could be a serious double hit in terms of water coming ashore as the eye approaches at that direction, you could first have water coming from the atlantic on the eastern shoreline pushed by the southeast winds from the eye and then there's the eye that pushes into the sound to our west to get stack water up there, then as the eye passes. the northwest wind, the tailing wind could slam that water back on to the western shoreline. you could almost have a sandwich like effect of the water coming together. that could knock out roads, cut even put cuts in the island like that, like happened before in 2003. it could take out the pylons under homes. that's why managers are watching it closely. it's also why they've asked people to leave the island

is not as bad taas it was befor. officials say we'll have gale force winds through the night and hurricane force winds picking up in the morning. there also have been a tornado watch called here for -- until 5:00 in the morning. there was a tornado warning. got a lot of foul weather here tonight. only going to get worse. the biggest problem here, though, for the local managers is the threat of storm surge. any talk of the storm moving east, which there has been a little bit of, their concern is if the eye comes to the east of the outer banks, there could be a serious double hit in terms of water coming ashore. if the eye approaches at that direction, you could first have water coming from the atlantic on the eastern shoreline pushed by the southeast winds from the eye and as the eye pushes into the sounds, to our west, stack water up there and as the eye passes, the northwest wind, the tailing wind could slam all that water back to the western
