Posted: July 30, 2021 East Kootenay Wildfire Update The Bill Nye Mountain Wildfire, burning since about July 8 seven km southeast of Wasa, is now an estimated 2,054 hectares. BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) today reported the fire grew an estimated 50 hectares on July 29. “Personnel plan to map the perimeter the morning of Friday, July 30. Expect to see a change in size once this is complete. Growth is to the north, where the fire is backing down a north-facing slope. The fire is currently sheltered from prevailing winds, muting its activity. “Structure protection units arrived at the incident the evening of Thursday, July 29, and implementation is underway. On Friday, crews continue working toward current objectives for this fire: laying out and constructing control lines to the north of the fire to protect structures and build toward containment. Posted: July 28, 2021 Work continues on region’s two fires of note The Bill Nye Mountain Wildfire, burning since about July 8 seven km southeast of Wasa, is now an estimated 1,918 hectares. “On Tuesday evening, wind and terrain increased fire behaviour on the north flank, where planned ignitions on July 25 could not be completed, and caused the fire to move downslope toward Lazy Lake Road. This prompted an expansion of an evacuation order for properties in the area,” BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) July 28 reported. “While structures are not immediately threatened, the BC Wildfire Service recommended the evacuation order due to the potential for the Lazy Lake Road to be impacted, which would affect access and egress to these properties. ....

Carrie Schafer/e-KNOW photo The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) reports a planned ignition on the Bill Nye Mountain wildfire was a partial success. The planned ignition was partly completed on Sunday morning. “In the southern part of the area identified for the planned ignition, the operation was a success. Due to increased fire activity in the north part of the area, planned ignitions were halted. Ground crews will monitor and mop up the strengthen the anchor point on the south and southwest flanks. Crews will continue to line locate for heavy equipment to establish machine guards to protect structures along the west flank. Helicopters will continue bucketing to support ground crews.
