Welcome home: Navy's newest and biggest ship sails into New Plymouth for the first time

SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff
Steven Wereta is the only crewman who shares the same home as the Royal New Zealand Navy’s newest, and largest ship, HMNZS Aotearoa.
As HMNZS Aotearoa entered her home port for the first time, Steven Wereta watched the New Plymouth coastline with growing anticipation – the vessel was entering his home, too.
The 20-year-old is the only crew member of the Royal New Zealand Navy’s newest and largest ship to hail from its ceremonial home of Taranaki.
“I’m glad to be going home with this ship,” Wereta said. “It’s a real privilege.”

A student makes an impassioned plea to mayor Lianne Dalziel.
Problems started when protesters arrived on the council’s doorstep, and the Dalziel was nowhere to be seen.
Chants of “where’s our mayor?”, “show your face”, and “what do we want? Lianne Dalziel. When do we want her? Now” broke out. Other councillors who came outside to speak were heckled.

The life of one of Hāwera's most famous sons is to be detailed in a soon-to-be completed book called Towering Talent.
Its author Rolland McKellar writes about Ronald Hugh Morrieson, one of the country's most
successful writers.
"Hope I'm not one of those buggers famous when dead," one of Taranaki's most famous writers, Ronald Hugh Morrieson, once said.
The comment was made to author Maurice Shadbolt who visited Morrieson twice in Hāwera, several years apart.

Former Christchurch mayor works with schools on shared 'climate action campus'

Joseph Johnson/Stuff
Former Christchurch mayor and city councillor Vicki Buck, left, with Niki Stephenson, senior leader at Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery, at the site of what will soon be a shared campus for school students, focused on climate action.
A group of Christchurch schools are joining forces to establish a shared campus on the edge of the city's red zone that will give students an opportunity to learn about climate action.
At least eight Canterbury schools are onboard with the proposed climate action satellite campus, which has been led by former Christchurch mayor Vicki Buck. The campus is believed to be the first of its kind in Australasia.

John Cleese didn't look on the bright side of life in Palmerston North; Mick Jagger got no satisfaction from Invercargill. Both missed the point about travelling around Aotearoa: you'll find real New Zealand outside the main centres.
Thinking about school or summer holiday destinations? These might not be on your radar. If you haven't seen them, you don't know what you've missed. If you have, maybe it's time for another look.
