(whitney singing) - that show was so successful about the life of bobby and whitney. it got so many ratings. it just launched bravo network. - whitney, you aint gonna do (beep). what are you gonna do, put your hand on me? - at that time, whitney was still one of the biggest stars in the world, and we got this peek into the insane life they were living. - [whitney] no. - [bobby] sure. you can take a picture of me. - [rickey] bobby brown seemed to love the limelight. - i say, "no." he says, "yes." - whitney houston kind of ran from it. every episode of "being bobby brown" was crazy. - being a owner of a tv show has peaks and valleys because people tell you how hard it is to pitch a show and get it picked up, but they never tell you how hard it is to actually keep it. - welcome to the doctor's wives club. - black ownership and unscripted tv is so important because we need to be vested in our own stories and create generational wealth. and it's important to be tied to it. it's our stories so we should be able to benefit from our stories. - it is so important for us to have african american representation, especially female representation, with mona scott young and mariah huq, being the creators and the leaders of these african american reality shows so that we have true authenticity. - creating "married to medicine" has been a hell of a journey, but i wouldn't change it because it was so important for me to create something that we can call our own. (techno music) - we get into the 2000's. we are now in what people call the post-racial time. one of the things that happened was there was a mental health reckoning in the black community. - we'll take it step by step. one thing at time. - i think everyone, due to the events of the time, agreed that we were all existing in the state of ptsd and unscripted television was also reflecting that. the sort of struggles within the black community with mental health and how we dealt with it. - traditionally, there's been so much stigma around, in the black community, not talking about our mental health, not talking about therapy, not talking about the demons that we struggle with. - black creators are putting out all of these amazing shows that focus on issues like family dynamics, and parent-child relationships, and addiction, and to watch them can almost be like going to your own therapy session. - anything is a trigger.
