According to Billboard, this is the second year in a row that a hip hop group has been selected to receive this award. In fact, this time around two groups are being honoured - Salt-N-Pepa and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. The first hip hop group to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award was Run DMC in 2016.

The Recording Academy announced the full list of honorees for its 2021 Special Merit Awards on Tuesday.
