Month ago when i was covering the first day back at school, after the chicago public schools, parents were telling me they were cautiously optimistic, but there was a flustered back to school plan. there was a change in safety precautions. the school bus drivers didn t show up for some of their routes because they quit because of a vaccine mandate. and they had folded back or rolled back the temperature checks and health screenings that parents previously had been doing to make sure their kids were feeling healthy going into school. this was all because the district said they re putting into place this testing and tracing program. now the teacher is saying contact tracing is taking as long as 10 to 12 days. we know that s not effective. of that more than 500 people that have tested positive, that means there s been over 11,000 close contacts. it s not just this school seeing classes quarantine. the mayor expressing disappointment. teachers and parents frustrated with the mayor because ....

This season, we ll continue to monitor it and see where it goes. i know that the strategy that you have and the contact tracing it s got will be cumbersome for you. you ve got a mask mandate. you ve got daily temperature checks upon entering the building. volunteers need to show proof of vaccination. and you re notifying parent whose child was in a classroom of someone who tested positive. that is a lot to take on for a school system. how do you do you feel the weight of that, do you feel like you re able to sustain something like that? well, i ll be honest, it s difficult. our teachers are doing a great job of trying to pull all of that together. and our nurses are even doing a superhuman job. every day, they re tracking students. finding out who s tested positive. talking to parents. doing their version of contact tracing and entering that information into our data system. and we just have behind the scenes a lot of people trying to pull the data together. ....

Me about going back to school as numbers continue to rise covid wise across the state of texas. take a listen. she s feeling good. how are you feeling? excited? mommy is nervous but excited. we re in a whole different world. there are a lot of things to weigh. we re going to see how it goes. we re going to stay positive. reporter: here at parker elementary in houston, it is masks on for students and staff. they had a nice, long line outside the building doing temperature checks on those who walked in. that will be the plan going forward. i spoke to parents, asked if they feel like this is enough to keep in classroom learning on track. they said it feels like this is the best they can do. they also admitted all of the back and forth between districts and the governor leaves them feeling a bit stuck in the middle of all this. ....

School year begins. priscilla thompson is live in austin. also joining us, the superintendent of the austin independent school district. priscilla, it is first day of school in austin. what are they doing to keep kids safe? reporter: steph, in addition to offering rapid covid testing on campus, austin isd does temperature checks and screening. and they re one of the districts in the state requiring everyone on campus to wear a mask. and when that announcement came out last week, more than 700 parents switched their child enrollment from virtual learning to in person learning as a result. i was here this morning, speaking to parents. i want to play some of my conversations with them about the mask requirement. take a listen. as long as you have the mask on, we re good. stuff like that doesn t scare me, it is life, something we have to go through. as a father, i m excited, generally concerned still on how ....

Do things, and when you have a large group of people, doctors tell us, that s how coronavirus spreads. they have since october been doing these monster jam events around the country, and the promoters say they have had nobody come back and tell them that they were the case of a super spreader event but they also know that they have to encourage people to follow safe distancing, protocols. there will not be a requirement for folks to have mask although they encourage folks to wear masks at events like this. they re prepared. they know people are coming. they re checking to make sure that people are coming to the building, like for instance us, showing our vaccination cards today, revealing that we have actually had the vaccinations, doing our temperature checks, but after all of that, they still have a large number of people coming. listen to what one of the folks who is part of this event here had to tell us. every event we ve been to has been selling extremely well. we re in july go ....
