Efforts are being made to lure travellers off an “uninviting” section of State Highway 1 and into Temuka’s town centre. Currently, according to the Temuka Community Board, travellers on State Highway 1/Vine St drive were not getting a positive impression of the town as the bypass road went between the saleyards and the rear of buildings fronting the main street, King St. Board chairman Paddy O’Reilly said in a submission to the Timaru District Council’s draft Long Term Plan, written on behalf of the board, that the stretch of highway along this route was dotted with yellow lines along both the sides of Vine St and “uninviting.” ....

A Temuka Domain aviary volunteer, concerned for the birds’ welfare, is urging the Timaru District Council to get on and build a new aviary as winter approaches. Laurie Sullivan said the ageing aviary was “cold and miserable” in winter, and he has cleared the wire netting roof of leaves with a leaf blower and rake twice in the past week, to allow more sunlight in. He said Temuka Transport had approached the board about commuters and other workers parking outside its offices and boardroom all day, forcing customers to leave their vehicle some distance from the premises. Further engagement with property owners and occupiers on King St revealed a need for time-designated parking on Wood St as well, where workers were also clogging up the kerbsides. “We also found that when people back out of Hammer Hardware, there s a couple of car parks on the side of the road that don t allow them to see,” O’Reilly said. “Losing those parks just allows a bit more freedom.” ....
