MSNBC Jose Diaz-Balart Reports December 20, 2021 15:11:00

Tough love. he said already this is going to be a severe winter. he said multiple times that this is a pandemic of the unvaccinated, because the people who are dying and hospitalized, they re disproportionately people who are unvaccinated. the biggest challenge, though, for this white house is that this is a pandemic that is also polarized politically. the people who need to hear most the message of getting vaccinated, of getting boosted, they are people who likely have political differences with the president. you re more likely, of course, to not be vaccinated if you re a republican. so president biden really has to in some ways strategize about how to cut through that. this testing issue is also really big. i know so many people who have been struggling to get at-home tests, who have been struggling to sit in lines for hours to get tested. this cannot be the way this goes forward. and you have to add the democrats and them arguing over the build back better plan, the president feeli ....

Kits to all-americans. here s jonathan reiner. listen. yes, that s exactly what you should do. mail these tests out to everyone. the trump administration missed an opportunity to mail masks to everyone. this administration should be mailing tests to everyone. this notion that people are going to submit their the receipts for their $24 test to their insurance company is fanciful. imagine what would happen to vaccinations if people had to pay for it up front and then bill their insurance companies. that wouldn t work. same thing is for testing. we need too get our act together. your thoughts there, doctor, on the testing issue and whether the government should be sending tests to everyone. you know, i couldn t agree more. the british are doing that. they re sending tests to everybody s home. last year, you know, the trump administration sent checks to everybody s home. we can do this. we should be sending tests to everybody. we should be sending masks to everybody. it s hard but ....

The way we did the first two doses, that was because we in emergency. i ve talked to a lot of scientists who indicate that actually we should spread out the second dose, and we ve seen no guidance on that either. right. so no guidance on that either. definitely there is evidence that spacing out those primary doses does lead to a stronger and more prolonged immune response. obviously that s something we need to study more, but has to be revised in those guidelines and hasn t didn t one yet. i do think we have to be very careful in terms of updating, revising guidelines too often that may lead to confusion, but we need to do so when it s clear that the intent is clear essentially. well, the other point i know i steered you away from that point you were making earlier. this testing issue, doctor, it is we ve been talking about the need to be able to have ....

Olds. so, i want to make sure that if there is a recommendation, it s based on really good data and i can recommend it for my patients and make a decision as to whether i think it s the right way to go. and it puts more pressure on the importance of vaccinating adults who are around children, encouraging them because that is the buffer that will protect them. it puts more pressure on getting testing into schools which has not moved forward in a very effective way at all. i want, dr. besser, this testing issue. i m just reading here from joebiden.com back in 2020, when he was just a candidate and one thing he promised. we were going to expand cdc surveillance programs and other surveillance programs so we can offer tests to those who ask and those who may not know to ask. this pledge to expand testing. i mean, it s, you know, it s been we re going to expand testing, we re going to expand testing. clearly, we haven t done enough of it. what is the hold up here? ....

Responsibility, individualistic perspective, and i think in terms of ending the pandemic, we need a collective response. what i would like for the cdc and white house to think about in terms of messaging is that we are all in the same boat, the idea of the pandemic of unvaccinated, we have seen that it is not just the pandemic of the unvaccinated, when hospitals are at capacity, both people with covid and noncovid problems are impacted and we have cases across the country. we need a reset in terms of thinking about perspective that messaging is coming from. dr. hotez, the announcement, one of the first leaks from what the president was going to announce was the idea of calling on all schools to do testing. i am sitting here going this should have been laid out august 9th, not september 9th. is this still a strategy that s too focused on vaccinations and not thinking about the testing issue and masking issue? ....
