The recently concluded India-Australia cricket series had a few important life lessons, not just for sportsmen but even for the rest of us. “Magic” Johnson, a U.S. basketball player, once said, “In life, winning and losing will both happen. What is never acceptable is quitting.”
Bundled out for a paltry 36 in the first Test, the captain leaving soon after, losing the best bowlers to a spate of injuries, getting hit and being battered and bruised as they went along, this Indian team, even while being bent, refused to break and instead rose like a phoenix from the ashes to vanquish Australia, a team endowed with arguably the best bowlers in the world. What was remarkable about this series victory was that it was achieved though just three or four tried-and-tested players could pitch in.

My New Year resolution is to empower women through a message that has been buzzing in my head all through my adult years. I have watched, heard and read so much about abuse of women that I consider it my mission to address the issues faced by women in light of my 35 years of experience as a teacher and mother, though I know that the subject has been debated, discussed and dissected worldwide by eminent personalities, experts, serious thinkers as well as victims.

See how household chores are dispatched efficiently instead of taking tips from seminars.
Having attended a few motivation classes and having resolved to become a motivation trainer in my own right, I decided to reinforce an area which has always failed me right from my birth — time management, TM for short. I say right from my birth because I was rather in a hurry to make my entry into the world, doing it two months ahead of schedule. This could be the physiological reason for my poor TM.

Is there a change in consumer preference with instant gratification taking precedence over lasting value?
As a small boy, I saw an advertisement in a shop saying “the cost is long forgotten”. The line attracted me. I was too young to understand its true meaning, and so I asked my father what it was. His reply satisfied me, when he said the quality of the product would be remembered long and its cost would be forgotten. In short, the line mentioned that quality is supreme to cost.

They should reap the benefits of their labour and improve their standard of living.
My summer vacations were mostly spent at my grandparents’ home in a small township in Maharashtra surrounded by fields of cotton and groundnut. My grandfather was a civil engineer and during our formative years, he filled our minds with beautiful thoughts. He never advised us, but his stories and jokes got embedded in our minds.
One of the things he taught us was to say a prayer of thanks to the farmer and god before every meal. This became a habit for all his grandchildren and we follow it to this day. Now as a senior citizen, each morning, as I read the newspaper and hear the news, it saddens me that we have failed to respect the farmer who toils in inclement weather so that we can eat. We must expose our children to the farmers’ way of life. The farmer sows the seeds and gets the harvest with hard work and labour.

For home-based palliative care

It ensures that the patient remains in a familiar environment, even during the pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many of our habits and ways of thinking in all walks of life. So has it changed medical care and the facilities offered. Globally, in the context of the pandemic, demand for ICU beds surpassed the capacity. The persisting reluctance among the public to go to hospital due to the fear of contracting the dreaded infection has resulted in reduced hospital admissions. The restrictions enforced with regard to the number of people who can stay with a patient also pose difficulties in hospital admissions.
