number of principle meetings, the senior cabinet officials of biden's national security team to talk about this issue, the number of meetings was zero. we know that because had anyone gotten together to talk about what should we do about force protection, what should we do about protecting troops, the nature and extend of damages. someone would have noticed that secretary austin was missing. so you know, it's really inexcusable that there was an attack but an attack after attack after tack. biden's security team had no conversations about it. the message that that sends is they just don't care. >> martha: you know, it's been noted by both "the washington post" and "the washington examiner" in editorials today that this reflects some of the themes that you are talking about. this from "the washington post"
what does the president want people to remember today? >> reporter: hey there, jose. it was a forceful speech, an emotional speech. as you said, it was one that focused largely on several themes including truth and also history. that was part of the reason his campaign chose this venue which, as you said, was the site of the horrible massacre in 2019 where nine black worshippers were killed. it was also the site during the 1800s at the height of slavery this congregation was forced to meet in secret. the president today saying this election is a choice between lies and truth essentially, calling out the former president's supporters on january 6th who did not want to accept election results. he forcefully called donald trump a loser. he said a lot was at stake in this election. let's play some of what he said about truth. >> we shall know the truth and the truth shall set us free.
they're going to go back to messaging they believe worked for them. >> do you think it will work shannon it is one thing you know further you get away from events more you repeat yourself -- some people if it doesn't reflect their reality will start to not be motivated by that. >> yeah i think when you do talk about reality it is such a good point if you're trying to fill up your gas tank get your kid to school pay your rent, mortgage, the economy for most people is much more of a daily reminder of exactly what's going on in their lives. polling again and again shows that people not only say that the situation is bad for them now but a majority of them think things are actually getting worse and not better. they blame this administration specifically for its policies that they think have hurt them economically. so listen, that's the daily reminder there for people maybe more so than january 6th which is going to be in all of the commercials you're gong to continue to hear themes about tomorrow the president heads on to charleston to talk about white supremacy and threats of people that he thinks are connected to what he calls maga
and president trump. so i do think those themes are going to be a reminder out there but really gassing up tank and buying groceries is a day-to-day reminder for people when they decide who they're going vote for. >> sure democracies of it all is superimportant but also i think -- getting to the bottom of what really happened on january 6th could help defuse some of the attacks by joe biden on that day because we're just sort of going by the script that they say of what happened that day. meanwhile, shannon, there are a group of attorney generals who across the country who filed a brief regarding this idea of taking donald trump off of the ballots. here's what they said they said many americans will this is what the brief said many americans will become convinced that a few partisan actors have contrived to take a political decision out of ordinary voters hands. most, obviously, it cast confusion into an election cycle
because now, we are talking about a political bomb that will ignite many in the republican party with some pretty dangerous themes, to be honest. i mean, look, this notion of civil war. i realize that term gets thrown around. it is thrown around by republican and right-wing mainstream activists online right now. what did they really mean by? that would actually end anyone engage in that? probably not in a broad way. but certainly, lone actors and other people? sure. i think it reflects what they would feel has been decided, that somehow, their franchise was taken away from them and, despite the fact that the constitution and the law suggests it should be. >> brandon, how do you see this? how does it play out politically? >> look, i think this is going to be the mantra. remember, donald trump is trying to keep that republican base strong with him. the fact that he's actually going to be renominated, in and of itself, is kind of a warning sign moment for democracy. but the idea that they are going to stop or lower the temperature as this thing moves
beliefs in our democracy. all of us are being asked right now, what will we do to maintain our democracy? history is watching. the world is watching. >> so that was a winning message in 2020, three years later now, with the economy, geopolitical concerns and more, is that message going to resonate equally today? >> one hopes, fredricka. you saw in 2020 where democracy and reproductive rights were on the ballot, democracy and reproductive rights largely won. most election deniers, at least in the high-profile races, were defeated, and reproductive rights, we've seen, did extraordinarily well in 2020 and has since done well in kansas and ohio. i think the biden campaign will have to continue to hammer in on those themes, democracy and reproductive rights if joe biden and kamala harris are to prevail
released its first out of the year, previewing themes of tomorrow's speech. >> i have made the presidential -- i believe that there's free and fair elections, and the vote to vote fairly and have your vote counted. there is something dangerous happening in america. there is an extremist movement that doesn't share the basic beliefs of our democracy. all of us are being asked right now, what will we do to maintain our democracy? >> this week, president biden met with several historians and scholars, who urged him to make a forceful case defending our democracy. they were one of those scholars and earlier today, he talked about what he wants to hear from the president tomorrow. >> i hope that he addresses the existential crisis that we faced as a country. that donald trump and his maga republican support constitute,
number. i hope i got all that out. >> bill: i was watching your colleagues on fox business, participation went down, not a good sign. of the government jobs, when you add 52,000 that's part of the big number here. what does it say about the private sector, larry? >> well, the private sector is pretty much been flat. that's one of the themes of this year. i will have to look, bill, when i get -- catch a breath and i will look at the 12-month changes for all of 2023. but i think what you are going to see is the leader will either be government jobs or leisure jobs. there is nothing wrong with leisure jobs, it shows post covid consumer spending with a lot of credit card borrowing thrown in and healthcare jobs, social services, which are the near cousin to government jobs.
