Local Matters - Midwinter Christmas feeds people in need

Midwinter Christmas feeds people in need
This digital work by Andy Dunn brought in $170 for Love Soup.
A Midwinter Christmas dinner, held in Millwater last month, raised more than $1600 for local food charities
(HM May 19).
The event replaced the Swimarathon fundraiser, which its organisers, Rotary, say received few entrants this year.
Two members of the Rotary Satellite club of Ōrewa-Millwater, Brian Mullan and Theo Simeonidis, ran the Millwater Midwinter Christmas dinner.
Local businesses supported it generously with sponsorship, including Millies Café providing free use of the venue, and others providing items for a raffle.
A full house of 80 guests sat down to Christmas dinner with all the trimmings on Saturday, June 26. Entertainment was provided by The Trumpet Guy, John McGough.

Local Matters - Silverdale plans for new hub

Silverdale plans for new hub
A new community hub and marketplace is proposed for Silverdale, led by its business association.
Creating the modern equivalent of a village green community hub is the latest aspiration of local business association, Silverdale Business.
The organisation hopes to create this hub, including a covered market, within the Pioneer Village at the top of Silverdale Street.
The proposal, presented to the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board at its Community Forum last month, includes moving one of the historic buildings and constructing a substantial new building to provide cover for a 7-day a week, high quality market. It would also be a flexible space for community use, including entertainment.

Local Matters - Sign designs for Village

Sign designs for Village
A graphic of how the signs could look in Silverdale Village. These options are being put before the community for comment.
Silverdale Village is to get its own distinctive signs, with support from the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board.
Initial design ideas were drafted for the Silverdale Business Association, free of charge, by local board member Andy Dunn, who is a graphic artist.
The association is now putting those options before Silverdale businesses and the wider Silverdale community.
Silverdale Business chair Theo Simeonidis says these initial designs are simply to kick-start what he hopes will be a co-operative business and community consultation process.
