mendes, a new hour of american voices, and we begin with breaking news. just hours ago, a third unidentified objects was shot down over north america. canadian prime minister justin trudeau tweeted that they successfully downed the object using a u.s. f 22 a jet. it s unclear whether the latest object has anything to do with the chinese by balloon shutdown off the coast of carolina s just last week or the object that was down over alaska on friday. a short time ago, the pentagon issued a statement saying that president biden worked with trudeau to break down the crime. the statement also said that the u.s. to take to the object over alaska late friday night, and continuing to monitor as across into canadian and a minute, now we are waiting for an update. but for, now we have dan joining us for a new update. jeff, you asked me to tell you what it s coming in. so what did we learn from this incident? i think we ve got a few more details but hopefully we re gonna get a ....
Some are already there, certainly to look at the actual materials, and to find all these materials. it will take an information of what the pilots saw, as was discussed earlier by dan, and f-22s, and what they were experiencing, what they were watching these objects in the sky, certainly create new diagrams and maps of how these objects got their, and try to construct a full understanding of these objects. and you know, of course, the big 64,000 dollar question is, where did it come from? and hopefully, gathering this information, this intel, will build up that idea. and i think it just demonstrates a strong responsible relationship right now that we re seeing with this defense minister and with our president, and going slow, in terms of ensuring that we re getting the information right, but not going slow in terms of defending our country and our homeland, and certainly, canadian territory as well. but being very responsible in understanding that the facts ....
And regardless of the diplomatic repercussions, which there were none, clearly, we hadn t heard of any yet, it had to be taken down. today, it s interesting, it s a joint operation, as dan mentioned out of a norad joint operation, u.s. and canadian, demonstrating that they re tracking this now. no clear diplomatic angle yet, but when we find out what that stuff is and dissect it, i m sure we ll have a better idea of where it came from. joel, in dan de luce s reporting, he had some interesting analysis that we often hear when it comes to matters of national security of defense, which is this push and pull on transparency, and the way in which the comments that we are going to hear today that we are waiting to hear likely can be influenced by things that happened earlier in the week. walk us through, and they clearly have had briefings of their own behind closed doors, where part of the conversation has been not just what information do we have, what information do we want to share, an ....
What kind of a craft. so, it s just a long list of questions and an extraordinary week. and i think both u.s. and canadian authorities are gonna be under pressure to divulge more information, and maybe declassify more information so they can articulate the public or at least clear out some uncertainties. dan, you said something really critical there which is this is an extraordinary part of the context of this conversation, part of what we re going to be looking for and watching for as we get this briefing. is the way in which what has happened previously in this week impacts the amount of information and is shared and the context that is given, what will you be watching for, both in the substance of what is said, and the questions that they choose to answer? you know, there has been so little information provided about yesterday s incident, and very little even about the chinese spy balloon, that it ll be interesting to see if the canadians take a similar cautious approach, where ....
Later as it entered canadian airspace. dan, i m curious, can you talk us through why it was a u. s. jet that was used, of course, president biden approved this. we know that justin trudeau gave the order. do you have a sense of the mechanics there of how that played out? we don t have a lot. but certainly, as some viewers may not know or may know, that u.s. and canada have a joint aerospace defense command, norad, so they very much jointly defend the airspace of north america. and obviously, the u.s. does have a much larger air force, and there is an air force base in alaska where they started tracking this objects, jets were scrambled their first, and the canadians joined the effort later as it entered canadian airspace. and it might be that the f-22, which is incredibly sophisticated fighter jet, was decided to be the best option in this case, they had fired the missile and took it down. we also don t know how fast this object was moving. if it was moving slowly, they n dan jubut ....
