Elgar died 90 years ago this month, leaving behind 130 pages of sketches for a Third Symphony. The Great War had sapped his creative energies and then diverted them, and his wife’s death in 1920 seemed to augur a pulling down of the shutters. He was not idle during the last years of his life.
