오마이뉴스 (아래 오디오 버튼을 누르시면 편지를 음성으로 들을 수 있습니다. 편지낭독 서비스는 오마이뉴스 페이지에서만 가능합니다.) 상처 난 당신에게, 성애가 드립니다 이상하죠? 혜미씨 편지를 읽고서 10여 년 전 제 대학병원 생활이 자꾸 떠올랐습니다. 낙상사고로 1년 넘게 입원했던 시기요. 당시 정형외과 병동엔 나이 든 환자들이 다수였고 저 혼자 20대였는데, 딱 한 번 제 또래가 온 적이 있었거든요. 꽃같이 예쁜 이름을 가진 여자 친구였고 마침 저랑 고향도 같았어요. 가정 형편 탓에 고등학교 졸업 뒤 바로 과자공장에서 일하다가, 왼쪽 팔이 기계에 말려들어갔대요. 비교적 가볍게 보여서 '저 친구는 금방 나가겠다' 싶었는데, 며칠 뒤 그 친구가 어깨 아래로 팔을 절단해야 한다는 통보를 듣는 걸 보게 됐어요. 혈관과 신경을 살릴 수 없었다나봐요. 시각장애인이기도 한 친구 어머니가 의사 말을 듣고 병실 복도로 나가서 우셨는데... 처절했습니다. 태어나 처음 들어보는, 울음보다는 울부짖음에 가까운 소리였어요. 대통령 되겠다는 정치인들이 상상하는 '청년'은 누구일까요. 아마도 비장애인·남성·4년제 대학 졸업자·사무직 노동자, 그런 얼굴들이 아닐까요. 혜미씨가 짚은 것처럼, 그들이 언급하는 '청년'들 속에 제 친구의 자리는 있을까 싶었습니다. 트라우미가 남긴 긍정적 효과... 외상 후 성장 ⓒ 유성애 그 친구는 씩씩하게 잘 지내요. 3년 전엔 눈빛이 또렷한 아기도 낳았고요. 친구와 저의 경우를 보면서 계속 '소수자성'을 고민하게 됩니다. 장애인, 노인, 여성, 아픈 사람, 수급자... 어떤 이유에서든 주류나 기득권이 아닌 사람들, 사회의 바깥 경계로 밀려난 사람들. 아팠던 경험이 무슨 쓸모일까 싶었거든요. 저자 이지선씨 최근 강연을 접하곤 알게 됐어요. 상처받은 사람이 그 상처로 타인을 감쌀 때 어떤 일이 일어나는지를요. 대학 졸업 즈음 사고를 '만난' 이 분은 전신 55%에 3도 화상을 입어 암흑기를 지나야만 했고, 이후 다시 공부해 사회복지학 교수가 됐대요. 그는 '외상 후 성장(Post-traumatic Growth)' 개념을 언급하며, 트라우마엔 좋은 점도 있다고 말합니다. 사랑하는 사람과의 이별, 질병과 사고, 자연재해 등 전체 인구의 76%가 살면서 한번은 꼭 외상을 경험한다. 그러나 우리는 신체적·정신적 손상 또는 생명의 위협을 느낀 사고 뒤 긍정적인 변화도 겪는다. 상처를 경험하기 전보다 높은 수준의 성장, 회복을 넘어서는 성장이다. ⓒ SBS '사고 자체가 좋은 것은 아니지만 거기서 좋은 걸 이끌어내는 건 가능하다'고 말하는 그를 보며, 상처로 더 나은 세상을 만드는 사람들이 생각났습니다. 참사 유가족들이 대표적이겠죠? 책 (산만언니 씀, 푸른숲)를 며칠 전 읽었어요. 저자는 자신도 피해자이면서 다른 유족들을 내내 꼭 껴안습니다. 민식이법(교통안전)과 김용균법(노동안전), 세월호 참사법(재난재해정비) 등 희생자 이름이 붙은 법들, 그들의 죽음 덕분에 우리가 더 안전하게 살 수 있게 됐다고요. 안타까운 희생으로 바뀐 사회 고 이태석 신부도 그렇죠. 다큐 는 딱 제가 사고를 만난 2010년 말 개봉했어요. 저는 당시 4층 건물에서 떨어졌는데 살았고, 그 분은 해외 오지 선교 중 대장암으로 돌아가셨죠. 어느 정도 제 상태가 안정됐을 때 소식을 보곤, 몇 달간 혼자 고민했던 기억이 납니다. '왜 저 사람은 죽고 나는 살았나.' 죽으면 끝인 줄 알았거든요. 삶이 승리고, 죽음은 패배인 것 같아 보였거든요. 신이 존재한다면 저 사람이 살고, 내가 죽었어야 하는 게 아닌가 싶었거든요. 그런데 아니더라고요. 그분 사연이 알려지면서, 한 대학서 매년 아프리카로 선교사를 보내기로 했다는 기사를 봤어요. '이태석 장학금'이 생겨나 남수단 청소년들이 의료과정을 공부할 장학금을 주게 됐고요. 당시 마을에서 이 신부를 돕던 꼬마 토마스 아콧씨는, 한국에 와 그 돈으로 의대 과정을 마쳐 지금은 부산 한 병원에 전공의로 있다네요. 그가 출연한 방송 아래엔 이런 댓글이 좋아요 6200여개로 1위였어요. "종교가 어떤 길을 가야 하는가를 정확히 보여주는 것." ⓒ 인제대 의과대학 저는 제 경험으로 다른 이의 고통을 더 잘 상상하게 됐습니다. 타인의 아픔에도 더 공감하고 연대하게 됐어요. 이건 종교를 지닌 이지선·이태석씨, 그리고 병자·고아·빈자나 사회적 왕따와 어울린 예수에게서 배운 교훈이기도 한데, 2021년 한국 기독교는 거꾸로 가는 것처럼 보이네요. 차별금지법에 반대하면서요. 차별과 배제와 상처는 여전하다 '성소수자에게 축복기도를 했다'는 이유로 징계받은 젊은 목사 이야기를 아시죠? 이동환 목사는 결국 지난 6월 21일부터 서울 광화문 감리교 건물 앞에서 천막농성을 시작했대요. 교회 내 차별법(재판법 3조8항)을 폐기하라고요.
