With which you guys negotiated over the last several days with third countries the ability to bring flights in to, you know, to expand the number of places throughout europe and the middle east. why wasn t that done months ago? i mean, you yourself have just said, you knew exactly that this chaos was going to erupt at some point. why would there be the need to negotiate on the fly with these countries if couldn t that have been done before? i ll take your second question first. i have to tell you, i bristle at saying we bragged, okay? i haven t bragged about anything. i m trying to give you the straight dope from here, the good and the bad, and that means a lot to me. secondly, it is certainly the case that we have had to add countries and tried to add capacity in places. we did spend months negotiating transit centers to set up as part of our contingency planning in both the gulf and europe. as it turns out, we have been able to produce a throughput ....

Think it would be a useful expenditure of our time to monday morning quarterback the whole issue with bagram. it was closed down as part of the retro grade, jen. talking about monday morning quarterbacking. i m talking about why not look at the situation now? you need airfields that you can land on to get people out. jen, we are general major taylor. let me try it first and give it to the general clearly. we are improving our throughput at the hamid karzai international airport and we think we ll be able to continue to try to improve that. that s the goal. but what you re talking about is would be an expenditure of resources and personnel as well as an increase most likely to the threat that they re under to try to go back and, as you put it, retake bagram air base, which is the size of a small city. and i understand a lot of people ....

And europe. as it turned out, we have been able to produce a throughput that exceeded even our optimistic expectations in terms of the number of folks who could get out, so the fact is we are actually over performing in terms of the evacuation numbers and therefore we need a higher ceiling in terms of the number of beds and other facilities and transit centers, so we are simply adding capacity, but you cannot go from zero to yes in 24 hours. when we pick up the phone and call, they do not say what are you talking about? they know what we are talking about. that it has gone from 5,000 to 10,000. they adjust accordingly, and that reflects the work of painstaking diplomacy over the course of many months. yes. the question about afghanistan jake: we are trying to get ....

We get by the end of the month. i just don t want to speculate on what that will look like. the focus is on getting as many people out as fast as we it. we are doing that now, and we will factor all of those things in to whatever the departure timeline looks like to make sure we continue to maximize throughput as fast as we can. and with some exceptions, some small exceptions, we have been fortunate that nobody has. is there an effort to tally up the u.s. weapons and equipment under taliban control and is there any way to combat this? we talked about this before. ....

Game from miles away. i m sure it s more complicated, but what s the effort been like putting it together, and why are you doing it? sure. so why we re doing it, we re doing it because the administration is doing things that don t seem to match the facts on the ground. there s a throughput and coordination issue. we re not seeing the planes we need to get our folks out. all of these not just american citizens but afghan allies and the cord coordination. there s a lack of coordination resulting in confusion and fear for not just americans but also afghans on the ground. and so you re seeing not just veterans but state department folks in their official and personal capacities coming together across the internet to find the folks to the airport and rescue them. and so basically you re talking to your contacts on the ground and coordinating flights, essentially, for those folks so people know where they re going ....
