Hero cop who helped woman give birth at police station gate loses own child Share Johannesburg - One of the Mpumalanga police officers who was lauded as a hero after helping a Congolee woman give birth at the stationâs gate two weeks ago has lost her own child. Sergeant Itumeleng Motalaneâs first-born child died in Ermelo Hospital on Tuesday. Spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Police Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said he had been admitted following âcomplicationsâ. The deceased, Hlathi said, was Motalaneâs eldest of four children. The SAPS family in Mpumalanga, led by the Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Thulani Phahla, extended their condolences to Motalane and her family for the loss, Hlathi said. ....
“I was so confused that I could not even hear the baby crying. My male colleagues, who stood at a distance, were very happy and made screams ululating that the child was alive,” she said. Having tackled the challenge of safely delivering the baby, Motalane faced the task of cutting the umbilical cord. The officer turned to Google for help with great success. “After sourcing information, I then succeeded but had to rush to the Community Service Centre to search for something to tie it [umbilical cord]. Luckily I got a shoelace which I sanitised, tied the umbilical cord and at that time, we were waiting for an ambulance to arrive as my male colleagues had already summoned it. ....

Instinct and a little bit of help from Google have seen a Mpumalanga police officer safely deliver a baby in front of the Bethal police station. Sergeant Itumeleng Motalane had only just reported for duty on Monday evening when she and her colleagues heard a commotion at the police station gate. Motalane rushed outside and found a woman in labour, accompanied by her husband and sister. The 35-year-old pregnant woman was screaming due to labour pains, police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said. ....
