Waters started the race from pole position and had opened up a healthy lead in the opening laps before a safety car triggered by De Pasquale colliding with a wall in The Cutting changed both drivers' days. A sluggish pitstop under the safety car allowed Van Gisbergen to jump Waters for the lead, with the Tickford Racing driver eventually rejoining in fourth place.
