Drought may be over, but impacts remain for trees during maple syrup season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – It’s maple sugaring season in southern New England, but it may not be the best year for maple syrup crops.  Kim Calcagno with the Audubon Society of Rhode Island has been teaching the public about maple sugaring for years. Calcagno says, “You can’t tap a tree that’s really, you know, not doing well or stressed out.” Last year’s drought caused a high amount of stress on trees in our area, including the maple trees that produce the breakfast staple. Rain & snow late Sunday into early Monday

According to ABC6 StormTracker Meteorologist Tim Studebaker, the storm will peak during the overnight hours of T...

Aurora borealis: Geomagnetic storm brings very low local chance of visible northern lights Thursday evening

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The aurora borealis, or northern lights, are a beautiful and common sight in the arctic.  They’re not so common here in southern New England. Doctor Ian Dell’Antonio is a professor in the physics department at Brown University.  He says, “I’ve never unambiguously seen the aurora from Rhode Island in 20 years.” It’s rare for the lights to be visible this far south, but it can happen in particularly strong solar storms. Dell’Antonio says “Storms called coronal mass ejections send particles out into space.  On Monday, there was a coronal mass ejecti...
