Members of Allegheny County Council re-elected Democrat Pat Catena as council president Monday. Catena faced a challenge from five-term councilor Bob Macey, also a Democrat who is considered to be an ally of Democratic County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.
An Allegheny County Council proposal would establish a consistent process to reapportion council districts in the first year after the census.Allegheny County added more than 27,000 residents over the last ten years, according to 2020 Census data. Under current rules, the County Council president decides how the reapportionment process will occur. But some have criticized that process, saying that the system could encourage gerrymandering and create districts that don’t accurately represent local communities.
A divided Allegheny County Council on Tuesday approved creating an independent police review board. The board won’t be created until 2022 and it will only have jurisdiction over Allegheny County Police Department. Other municipalities with police departments in the county can opt-in to the board’s oversight, but that move would need to be approved by their local governments.
