An undersea volcano erupted in spectacular fashion near the Pacific nation of Tonga on Saturday, sending large tsunami waves crashing across the shore and people rushing to higher ground. A tsunami advisory was in effect for Hawaii, Alaska and the U.S. Pacific coast, with reports of waves pushing boats up in the docks in Hawaii.
An undersea volcano erupted late January 14 near the Pacific island nation of Tonga sending tsunami wave warnings across the ocean from Alaska to New Zealand.
The tsunami waves caused damage to boats as far away as New Zealand and Santa Cruz, California, but did not appear to cause any widespread damage.
There were no immediate reports of injuries in Tonga, but the eruption triggered a tsunami advisory for Hawaii, Alaska, and the U.S. Pacific coast.
