Strong to severe storms are expected today, here's the latest on timing and severe threats

Already is ironically the 16th anniversary of hurricane katrina. the one difference with the 11:00 p.m. update from the national hurricane center is the -- the track has shifted just a smidge to the east. just -- just a little bit. all right? the intensity is still at 105 miles per hour. but the pressure is dropping so as it approaches louisiana, it's going to start rapidly intensifying here in the coming hours. i mean, very soon. we have bands of showers already pushing into parts of the lower mississippi valley. and these are just a foreshadow of things to come. we're going to see hurricane ...

Quadrant, that is where you get the strongest winds, highest surge and biggest tornado potential. this is what the radar will look like later this afternoon going into this evening as it comes ashore. notice the thunderstorms piling up across southeastern louisiana, moving up into mississippi and alabama. on this side as it approaches, the winds will cause the water to pile up and we could see catastrophic storm surge up to 15 feet near the mouth of the mississippi. in terms of the rainfall, when it makes landfall, it will slow down and really rain itself out. where that center goes, we'll see...

Just as a band was coming over you from satellite beach florida. you're saying you have seen some of the strongest winds so far. what is it like out there? >> reporter: it's very hit or miss. in between the bands you can see bright blue sky. that's that dry mid level air that is coming in. then those bands will move in and mix that with strauk winong we have seen small branches flying by inside some bands and some near water spouts. these storms do have tornado potential as they come ashore especially in the front right quadrant of this near stationary storm that should start to drift north so...
