CNN The Situation Room March 20, 2014 22:24:00

Become much more difficult. reporter: the cockpit voice recorder stores at least two hours of audio and the data recorder contains at least 36 hours of instrument data, both crucial to understanding what happened. transmitters on the recorders send out a locating tone. but that only lasts for 30 days. malaysian officials say without the pings, they don t have the technology to find them on their own. looking and then before that becomes an issue then malaysian submarines don t have it. reporter: it may have sunk far from where the debris has drifted. the water can be 13,000 feet deep, ten times height of the empire state building. it becomes a situation of trying to hear a very tiny signal in a really complex background noise. and that s a hard problem no ....

Somewhere out there. whether it s land or sea. that is the emergency locater transmitter in the tail. correct. that is the epirb, on the rafts. and then, of course we like to call them the old fashioned name, black boxes, cockpit voice recorder. give me a breakdown on those other two transmitters and battery life left on the black boxes. well, the elt and the epirbs are short-term, 24 to 48 hours. once they touch water they start sending a signal for only 24 to 48 hours. so what was in the tail and what was on those life rafts is done. correct. however, if that had happened, if they did get water in them, there s 16 satellites constantly monitoring that frequency. so that s what brings in some puzzling and they re getting nothing. they got nothing. water is one trigger. les, i thought the other trigger was actually impact. so we know one thing. this plane is not flying 12 days ....

CNN Weed 2 Cannabis Madness Dr. Sanjay Gupta Reports March 16, 2014 01:20:00

Try to find an airfield. do whatever you have to do. if you go left, i think now you re talking about if we focus on the flight crew that this was a suicide. because there s nothing out there in that ocean. it s just a black hole. you re going to run out of fuel. that northern route and the southern route, the end of those arks represent the last amount of fuel in that airplane. that s when the planes would have run out of fuel. the most northern and the most southern. so north, you got a chance. the passengers have a chance. south, i think you re looking in the water. given the size of the indian ocean, if a plane goes down, don t you think you would have seen something? some sort of debris? some sort of oil slick, smoke? something picked up by someone? there s a device called an emergency locator transmitter. right. and you would expect that it works under water. what happens is you expect some life rafts to eject and there s transmitters on those ....

Ground? we re in the cyber age but we re still primitive in getting that type of information. the storage is data is huge. terabytes? terabytes. there are no microwave transmitters in the middle of the ocean. that s why flying saucers can quote disappear because there are no radar towers in the middle of the ocean. do you see advances in satellite technology working to prevent this type of disappearance? about compression technology and design of the airplane with more transmitters and better satellite communications, all of them can make for better flights so that we can rest confident that no one man can disable the entire airplane. thank you so much dr. kaku. be sure to pick up the future of the mind. just ahead, a guess i cannot wait to interview, it s former ....

Would take a long time. this is out in the open sea. if this thing went straight down, just straight down, you still would have had a debris field so that s the thing that s so baffling here. there s a lot of pieces to those flights and a lot of floatable things, and the fact that these planes and boats and satellites looking for it have found nothing, that i think, at least for me, is see, this is what doesn t i can t grapple w.again, depressurization, those pilots, everyone would have had to pass out. someone who have turned off the transponders, there s so many backups and reassurances, so they could have arguably flown off the transmitters, flown under radar and landed, myanmar, nicobar islands, but i hate to speculate they could be holding the plane hostage, negotiating for ran some, greg, maybe that s why they haven t announced, maybe there s something in the cargo space they are trying to negotiate. i mean, that bay of malacca and region baybenningial, ....
