NUIQSUT, Alaska (AP) — Though the weather outside was frightful, schoolchildren in the northern Alaska Inupiac community of Nuiqsut were so delighted for a visit by Santa that they braved wind chills of 25 degrees below zero just to see him land on a snow-covered airstrip.
His visit was part of Operation Santa Claus in Alaska, an annual tradition by the state's national guard to deliver supplies and presents to the remote villages.
Santa and Mrs. Claus left Rudolph at home to catch a ride recently on an Alaska Air National Guard cargo plane to visit the Inupiac village of Nuiqsut, about 30 miles south of the Arctic Ocean.
Children braved freezing conditions in Nuiqsut to meet Santa as part of an annual visit by the Alaska Air National Guard.
