reporter: there certainly has been a lot of criticism and it s coming from people inside misurata who say that they would like nato to conduct more air strikes in that area. nato is in a very difficult position, because it s such a densely populated urban area there, and what gadhafi is doing is he s hiding tanks and artillery pieces in that urban area very close to schools. at some point in schools and other civilian installations. he s also using civilian vehicles. so it s difficult for nato to make out what is a gadhafi target and what is not. certainly that s caused criticism for people in misurata. people in the east also criticizing nato, as well. we did have some air strikes here tonight. it was three or four major explosions we heard on the outskirts of tripoli. it seems nato has been ramping up the air strikes somewhat, hitting targets around tripoli, telling us some of them are ....
And from some communication i ve had with journalists that are on the scene in misrata, which is that some time in the late afternoon yesterday chris and tim were with a group of other journalists out on what i guess is called tripoli street in misrata. they came under fire and suffered some sort of explosive attack, whether it was rocket-propelled grenade or a mortar seems to be somewhat in question. but they were, of course, grievesously wounded and tim and chris didn t survive their wounds and were evacuated to a triage tent with two other journalists who were also wounded as well. so i don t know much more, frankly, than i think everybody else knows. the amazing thing, and you know it firsthand when covering this, i mean, you re clearly putting your life at risk just going to these places, yet sometimes you emerge unskaifted and sometimes you pay the ....
Tanks, blow up tanks in the night, artillery pieces, break the siege around misratah, enable rebels to move across the east of the country toward t tripoli. but these things are unlikely to happen. gadhafi has a depth of support in some tribs that have 300,000 people. some have been senior leaders in the army. there is a depth of loyalty that however we enable the rebels at the moment will be difficult to sort of overthrow that outside of misratah, et cetera. nic, there are reports obviously of two journalists who were killed in libya. you were on the ground. how dangerous of a situation is that? did you feel that you were always in that kind of danger when you were on the ground? i think where we were, which was on the government side, was safer than being in misratah at the center. we were on the outskirts and we can see down tripoli street ....
That goes on pretty much every day. the last that i ve gotten from people in misurata is there was a lot of shelling, especially in the city center. we do have information about what happened with that group of photo journalists. it was four of them, and all this happened on the western fringes of misurata in a place called tripoli street, one of the most dangerous points in misurata. it appears they were in the front line area with some of the rebel fighters when that rocket-propelled grenade hit and they were all returned to one of the few hospitals there as fast as possible, tim, however, was pronounced dead on arrival. chris was rushed into an emergency room but died in that hospital a couple of hours later. of course, all of us who were covering the war here in libya are absolutely devastated at what happened. ky tell you from having been in that hospital in misurata, it s ....
