Colchester has a new fire chief. The Selectboard Tuesday night appointed Assistant Chief Seth Lasker to the role. It comes as the community continues to address what union members have said are dangerous labor shortages within the department.
The day after a packed Selectboard meeting, the town manager announced plans to hire two new firefighters — one to fill a vacant spot “as soon as possible” and another in July.
Dozens of Colchester firefighters and community members met Tuesday to voice their concerns about the department’s staffing issues.
The former chief’s departure further depletes the department, which recently lost one of its three full-time firefighters.
