Should Katie Taylor vs Natasha Jonas have been the headline act?

Should Katie Taylor vs Natasha Jonas have been the headline act?
George Gigney looks back on the Sky Sports broadcast that gave Eubank Jnr and Hatton's non-title fights a higher billing than Bivol’s defence against Richards and made Katie Taylor vs Natasha Jonas a supporting act
THERE had been plenty of worthwhile discussion in the days and weeks leading up to Sky Sports’ Manchester card topped by Derek Chisora and Joseph Parker about whether it deserved to be pay-per-view. There’s little point revisiting that discussion here, but it is worth looking at the order of fights on the card. First, the main event. Yes, Chisora is a well-known and popular commodity in the UK and Parker is also a familiar face – plus they’re both heavyweights, which always helps – but this was an inferior matchup compared to Katie Taylor’s defence of her undisputed lightweight title against Natasha Jonas. Not only was there the history of their unforgettable meeting at the 2012 Olympics, but also the terrific form they were both bringing into the fight.

Joseph Parker says the best is yet to come after his first win under new trainer Andy Lee.
The Kiwi heavyweight has conceded he took his "foot off the accelerator" against Derek Chisora but blamed an elbow injury, sustained during the fight, for slowing him down.
Parker won a split decision in Manchester after suffering a knockdown in the first round.
It was the final fight in his deal with Matchroom Boxing and he is now eyeing an immediate re-match with Chisora, while Dillian Whyte and Andy Ruiz are the other possibilities.

Bob Arum now 'pessimistic' about Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua fight, but sources say talks still 'inching forward'

Bob Arum deems Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua fight 'dead in water,' but sources say talks still 'inching forward'
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum turned the Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua fight negotiating drama up a notch on Thursday when he referred to the discussed blockbuster boxing match for this summer as "dead in the water."
It happened as Arum, who co-promotes Fury in the United States, told the UK's Telegraph that talks with the fight's Saudi Arabian hosts "will take months" or more to resolve and Fury and Joshua will have to take other opponents in the meantime.
However, sources told ESPN's Mark Kriegel on Thursday that Fury-Joshua fight negotiations are still "inching forward." The Saudi hosts are on board to pay the proposed site fee of $150 million to stage the megafight and documents are currently being sent back and forth, the sources said.

Triller - The joke's on us - Boxing News

Triller’s latest broadcast makes a mockery of the sport as we know it, writes George Gigney
“YOU can tell how professional this event is by them having me here. We have a bout between Ben Askren – I don’t know who that is still and I’ve been reading up on him all week – and Jake Paul. They both suck, but at least somebody’s gonna get hurt.” Those are the words of Pete Davidson, a comedian drafted in to provide commentary for the fight between Paul and Askren on Triller. Unfortunately for me, and anyone choosing to read this, that spectacle is being explored in this column as it was more akin to a media performance than an actual boxing card.

Jake Paul's knockout prediction vs. Askren (2:31)
Jake Paul predicts he will knock out Ben Askren faster than Jorge Masvidal did at UFC 239. (2:31)
While the world waits for Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury, Jose Ramirez-Josh Taylor and Teofimo Lopez-George Kambosos, the boxing spotlight will be placed on the sideshows as celebrities and former champions are making their way into the squared circle. There is little doubt that boxing purists hate what's on tap this weekend, but the reality is that Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren will indeed capture the attention of the sports and celebrity world. Will Triller find gold with yet another music and boxing showcase?
