UN champions strong measures against violence in Colombia
Geneva, Dec 15 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet on Tuesday urged the Colombian government to take forceful measures to halt violence in the country.
I call on the Colombian authorities to take harsh and much more effective measures to protect its population from this appalling violence, Bachelet said.
She pointed out Colombia´s responsibility for protecting its citizens, a commitment that, she said, should not only be complied with the weight of the law.
It is a duty of the State to be present throughout the country, thus implementing a wide range of comprehensive public policies, not only with harsh measures against those responsible for violence but also by providing basic services and safeguarding the pivotal rights of the population. ....
