Jones,” and “1863.” Names have been smoked onto ceilings by candle flame, scratched into walls with rocks or knives, or neatly handwritten with pencil or ink. The three-year study, which ended in 2019, yielded only 41 confirmed signatures left by Civil War soldiers during wartime.
