Police say they have “restrained” National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine for continuously holding massive rallies on Kalangala island amidst the increased threats of coronavirus, in total disregard of the Electoral Commission and Ministry of health guidelines.
Earlier on, a tweet on Bobi Wine’s Twitter timeline said, “Bobi Wine and his entire campaign team arrested in Kalangala! Media blocked. – Admin.” Pictures and videos showed Bobi Wine and supporters of NUP being led away by Police.
However, police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said he’s being transferred to his home in Magere, Wakiso district. ....

Bobi Wine detained again in Uganda

UGANDAN presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, was arrested again later on Wednesday amid accusations that he breached coronavirus restrictions.
National Unity Platform party spokesman Joel Senyonyi said: “Police have arrested him together with his whole campaign team. They put them in police trucks and started driving but we don’t know where they are taking them.”
Police were accused of firing tear gas at crowds who protested against his arrest in Uganda’s central Kalangala region. One supporter said: “They are firing even now to disperse people gathering on roads.”
Police denied the allegations, accusing the crowds of attacking police vehicles, letting down tyres and inciting violence. ....

The Electoral Commission ban on political campaigns in 20 districts and cities branded “super spreaders” of the infectious coronavirus is a very suspicious matter for opposition presidential and parliamentary candidates.
The ban locks out two of the largest voting blocs in the country; Kampala and Wakiso and ultimately denies all presidential candidates any opportunity to woo approximately six million out of 17 million registered voters countrywide. To many in the opposition, campaigns cannot be complete without mobilizing support in Kampala and Wakiso that have a combined voting bloc of about 2.5 million voters. ....

National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, has vowed to conduct physical campaigns in the banned districts in total defiance of a directive by the Electoral Commission (EC) suspending campaigns in some parts of the country.
EC last Saturday banned campaign meetings in Kampala, Wakiso, Mbarara, Kabarole, Luweero, Kasese, Masaka, Jinja, Kalungu, Kazo and Tororo, citing rising Covid -19 cases.
