Trouble is brewing in the island’s sole child protection agency.
Staff at the state-run Child Care Board (CCB) is demanding the resignation or removal of the entire board over what they claim is the chairperson’s direct involvement in the daily running of the agency and more particularly, her handling of the filling of the vacant post of Deputy Director.
The disgruntled workers, who are ready to take industrial action over the matter, have called in their bargaining agent, the Unity Trade Union (UTU) led by Opposition Senator Caswell Franklyn to represent them. ....

We have heard repeatedly that COVID-19 presents unprecedented challenges in these unprecedented times. We get it. 
The fallout of the pandemic socially and economically is all too apparent. That is why we empathise with employers just as much as we feel the pain of employees. 
But even in the face of this mayhem and uncertainty, we cannot in good faith condone any situations that are not just or fair to our workers. 
We reported Wednesday that prominent attorney-at-law Michael Lashley QC called for measures to be put in place to shield workers from victimisation.
Lashley said: “They are being pressured and my position is that it is indeed an unlawful act by the employer to say to that employee, ‘you have to come back to work or else’ when you have a situation where someone is waiting on a test.  ....

Prison authorities will be launching an investigation into the behaviour of a prison officer who is currently in quarantine at a south coast hotel awaiting his COVID-19 test results.
Reports reaching
Barbados TODAY claimed that the officer had attempted to take his own life but this was refuted by an inside source at the property.
The source said the prison officer went on to his balcony and loudly expressed his frustration at the length of time he was being kept in quarantine.
“He said he felt like he was going out of his mind. Yes, he was being loud and boisterous about what we are going through, but he never attempted to jump.  Some guests saw him and called the police,” said a fellow prison officer who is also in quarantine. ....

Three prison officers are in the process of filing two separate lawsuits against the Government of Barbados over COVID-19 related issues.
Industrial Relations Advisor to the Prison Officers Association of Barbados (POAB) and trade union leader Senator Caswell Franklyn disclosed today that the first action is one of defamation of character against the men whom Government officials had publicly said could not be found for testing for the virus.
On New Year’s Day, Minister of Home Affairs, Information and Public Affairs Wilfred Abrahams made a call during a ‘live’ television and radio broadcast for the three to come forward for testing and urged anyone who knew of their whereabouts to encourage them to do so. ....
