Lockheed Martin announced a new line of mid-size tactical Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) satellites on Monday.
The company is pitching the new satellite- about the size of a small refrigerator- as an alternative to tactical surveillance platforms like airplanes and drones. These satellites, based on Lockheed Martin’s LM 400 mid-size bus, will give the military the ability to track moving targets from space without having to put people at risk.
By following open standards like Open Mission System (OMS) and Universal Command and Control Interface (UCI), these LM 400-based tactical ISR satellites connect with other warfighting platforms and battle management systems from all services. New Tactical ISR Satellites Provide Global, Persistent Support For Warfighters
Lockheed Martin is addressing the accelerating demand for space-enabled warfighting capabilities with a new line of rapid, integrated and affordable tactical Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) satellites. These satellites, based on Lockheed Martin’s LM 400 mid-size bus, enable tactical warfighters to track moving targets at long ranges and operate in contested and denied environments on compressed timelines at the scale of battle.
Based on flight-proven and mature components, an open architecture, and a highly produceable design, the affordable LM 400 satellite bus forms the backbone of this needed capability across a variety of emerging mission areas. The last couple of years have seen the US and UK military adopt open architectures as the preferred alternative to custom and proprietary electronics technology designs. The Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) Initiative was first introduced in 1994 but, arguably, the real paradigm shift took place in 2019, when the U.S. DoD issued a memorandum mandating the use of the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) for all weapons systems going forward and which was then made law, requiring all defence acquisition programs (MDAP) to be designed and developed using a MOSA. ....
