Out of the Year want January the 31st and strike a trade deal with Brussels before the end of next year 2 Sunday newspapers are also reporting that the prime minister wants to overhaul the civil service with external experts replacing White Hall staff to make sure his agenda is delivered but the former head of the Foreign Office Lord Ricketts is wary of large scale change in my experience it never achieves the outcome people want it absorbs a civil service in infliction of memory doing the plumbing while they should be out there making new policies so no doubt there were some trainer I would not go for a large shake up the shadow chancellor John McDonnell has joined Jeremy Corbyn in apologising for Labour's performance in the general election Mr McDonnell said it was catastrophic to lose 59 seats for said the media's portrayal of Mr Colvin was also a key factor in the defeat he also said that in his feud Labour's next leader should be a woman they work at m.p. Lisa Nandy told the B.B.C.'s Andrew Marr. She was contemplating entering the race to succeed Mr Corbin early next year I am seriously thinking about it I've never said that before because in all honesty I'd never have meant that the thaw but the truth is that this situation is now incredibly start I've got constituents who woke up on Friday morning with no sense of hope at all about what the future is going to bring a man is in a critical condition in hospital after being shot in the street by police in hole no one else was injured in the incident early this morning but the place watchdog has been informed officers were initially called to reports of a man brandishing a gun these people live close to the same Jochem if they were you so it obvious you're a real the we call those of the not done as all rolled by it's not very good I mean I was born as a rotten and my mom was as well you know to say something like this it's terrible 14 year old boy has been arrested in connection with the murder of another teenager in Bristol the 17 year old victim was found fatally injured in Bedminster yesterday he was taken to hospital but died a short time later a un climate summit has ended in Madrid 2 days later after delegates finally reached a compromise on reducing greenhouse gases there was no agreement on key issues such as the trading of carbon emissions around 2000 homes are still without water in part of Bedfordshire where some residents haven't had a supply since Friday and Liam water says it is trying to fix an air locked water main in the Leighton Buzzard area warning that work is likely to continue through the night football ever turn help Manchester United to one all draw in the Premier League elsewhere Tottenham scored a late winner to the Wolverhampton Wanderers to watch b.b.c. The selection of b.b.c. What's coming up on the show between now and 5 o'clock well liver sees it as evidence that the n.h.s. Is risk onto a post Briggs it deal with the Us will have more next on b b c t's and also I mean spring to Teesside comedian who's working with Vic inboard on the new big night which is on the telly tonight the grit thing about Vic and Bob is that Vic would increase the orbit towards this but then reels it back a bit His is slightly surreal but it's more grounded sort of grit right there it's a fascinating insight to how we can both work we'll have more very shortly try to control the news and sport every 15 minutes weather forecast for Paul Mooney is this rain ever going to end Paul tell us in about 10 we've got Gary's cup for you Steve Michael best way to keep. The selections on b.b.c. . Well we start off with. It as evidence the n.h.s. Is at risk post Briggs a trade deal with the us. At a news conference this morning Jeremy Coleman Brown these documents which he said should be n.h.s. Is for sale only to the conservatives despite repeated denials from the conservatives joins us now own the line is Jenny Chapman the little counter when did for Darlington how you Jenny Hi Gary how are you doing I'm good thank you very much so where did this evidence come from because we know you have a redacted version where is this one reductive version come from well this is found lurking on a Web site and it's from the Americans and it's their pitch I mean talks of trade negotiations to this is what the Americans want and it's what we suspected they were after all 'd along because they've always said they want food and drink industry agriculture pharmaceuticals health they're big big markets for the Americans to want to come in and exploit and they just have a very different attitude to those things than waiting in the u.k. And so that's where it's come from and you know. It's shocking in itself but I think what's really got to take all is that it was denied so much by Boris Johnson So that's what's really grabbing the attention today how far out of this does this conversation go back from its months it goes back to 2017. And Liam Fox who is the international trade secretary and then was involved in at least one of the meetings ministers it was ministerial level they were aware that this is happening and it's a series of meetings so the denials that we've had and the owner we wouldn't possibly even discuss such a thing is not on the table has been completely blown apart today now why would any u.k. Government of any color risk medicines or services to the n.h.s. Any more expensive I can get my head around that you know well that's a good point but the trouble I mean this goes back to Boris Johnson's backs that they are the problem with that is it takes it out without any get with anybody else . And no. Deal with the e.u. Either so the u.k. In that position has to have something agreed by the end of 2020 but we have nothing so we are very very weak and we're going to be a bit desperate for agreements in that in that situation so because of that we are we are fair craving really other economies who are larger than us to say oh you know what was the deal that we what these the terms that we want because they're much more powerful than we would be in that that circumstance is there any evidence in any of this that not you've seen that suggested that the government agreed to when you the suggestions you know that they haven't agreed to anything but that isn't the point the point is that we will it is only because I'm going to ask you for your house and I want you and I want all your money and you know your rings and you can say you know yeah unless I am desperate and I need to do a deal with somebody in your the only person there then I might have to give away more than I really want and that's the point but why you know if it's off the table it shouldn't be in these documents. This shouldn't be happening and they shouldn't have been denying it like I have so they're wrong to be put in the u.k. In a weak position they're going to say and they're wrong to have been lying about that gentlemen thank you ever so much knowledge that some of Clark who's the conservative candidate from little south and east Cleveland Good afternoon to you Simon No hello Gary voters of any political range listening this may be worried could be worried will be worried are you worried they will be they will be well regarded how you are the words I think probably thoughtless by the most cynical malarky the Labor Party of course a long history of particular politics I don't think I've heard about this. Ever given by a politician and Jenny just given to you I cannot believe she has the gall to try and recall the sick we also learned on a website this is what the American Friends. This is a problem American in terms of trade talks full respect to the government has been incredibly clear that under no circumstances. Will we be offering the n.h.s. To sell it in any way shape or form if you quite rightly got Jenny to concede 'd that the government hasn't agreed and. Right now that's what we wanted Simon I think that's I think it's right in there asking that these around some hopes you know something that they have in the trade talks but look you know we are very clear that this is not on the table I mean look I mean the the other point you raise game that's a sensible one is what political party would commit suicide by selling off the n.h.s. If a conservative. If labor to that of any party we would rightly get precisely 0 but the ceiling general election so this story is plot which is being sketched out by labor is about as credible as I can find the parallel let me find it here in the area Larry let me trying to. Let me put a scenario to you so the American C.E.O.'s. A small island just off the mainland of Europe and they can pick and choose when they want how would they want what they want to vote so rather than being in one room just a drip drip feed this is what we want we want access to your drugs market we want access to so we can extend patents to drugs we surely slowly want to take over your n.h.s. Is that not the worry that somebody who we perceive is our ally somebody that we're going to run to for a trade they actually want something that means so desperate it was no I mean look the u.k. Is the world's 5th biggest economy there are lots of strength we're not some sort of tiny island nation unable to fend for ourselves that's the attitude frankly which the Labor Party in the liberal the taken throughout the Bracks process they don't believe in our country's ability to succeed on the other side of our access it is I'm afraid a cynical attempt to distract from the journey called in yesterday was destroyed by Andrew Neil in his interview and so they're now dredging up some ridiculous documents they found online to try and conjure a plot to sell the n.h.s. And this is. So they call it is wrong and he says the sake of a passage so just let me ask you why would you copy that which I really put out redacted Why is it going on because the website because it's an internal civil service document I mean I'm a treasury minister I obviously you know the there are confidential documents in terms of trade negotiations with other countries you know we don't publish the U.K.'s position all of these for all the world to see that would be to give thanks very much Jeremy called in by the way splashing u.k. Internal documents all around the world but this is I'm afraid a deeply cynical attempt to frighten people to scare monger and his role I mean look the Conservative party is totally committed to the n.h.s. Being free at the point of leave everyone elites that we will never sell it and this is just a lot to suggest in any way shape or form so that the n.h.s. Is in a hole anywhere equal totally safe I mean look I will not stand for election as the next general election in any way shape or form we attempt to sell off the n.h.s. It is just this no one is ever going to contemplate that and it is a cynical attempt to scare people and it should not succeed one of the one we could turn of course to the nickel you come in we're nowhere near you that's what you might want to do Not about anything and he's given to you right over. The coolant given that didn't you say exactly that I mean it given that this afternoon we could not be clearer no way not on our watch it's not going to Simon thank you very much for joining us on b.b.c. 3 some o'clock we could serve a candidate for middle for South and East Cleveland it is quarter past full b.c. Let's get the latest headlines on big cities with Ana Marie a Cleveland police sergeant will get to keep his job after documents on paedophiles and the victims he was supposed to be keeping secure were ended up in a skip in home people and the government dismisses as total nonsense Labor's claims that they've got evidence that the n.h.s. Is for sale post practice it just Frankland. Path Wednesday afternoon sports the Middlesbrough head coach Jonathan Woodgate is hoping for all 3 points as his side welcome Barnsley to the Riverside Stadium tonight more sport in 15 minutes so if you are off to the match tonight it's going to stick lonely wet through the night although the rain will tend to become increasingly patchy as we get after midnight going to feel my old for this time of year temperatures anything between $4.00 and $8.00 degrees Celsius over night fall conference of weather forecast with Paul Mooney for you around about $10.00 to $5.00. Gary Phillips and is a man. That's right this Friday he'll be asked in the Christmas light switch on in Holly poll you can join me and producer Helen in the refund church where we haven't even a free festive for now in the 10 min for all the family and of course we'll get the town little Christmas to join us in church in Holly pull this Friday night the festivities stop through for lighting up. This Christmas. It's going to be great I'm just not be through it sort of steers a little bit I'm going to beat Rod Stewart under you know I'm going to commit when I dressed up for children ages roadster will be very tight trousers on and the shirt could turn on your right if you're just after quarter past 4 thank you very much for being with us it's my job every afternoon just to keep your do what's going on for top and nationally internationally if it affects you we will bring it your way now Britten Bob big night it's but when you tell you tonight big c 4 10 o'clock kind of weird Now if you watch the 1st season you'll have seen. Von Norman in the show now I'm at Von because I saw the pilot they did for Christmas now recognise the Tay-Sachs and and I thought I read in a look in more out of shape when we went on to say those of the road we had to nominate a big truck on and I've kept in touch with him ever since now we came into big cities yesterday with his comedy partner John and to talk to me about this show's return my name is Vaughn Norman. Time idiot. I know what you face time idiot and I can you talk about it all of it if you want place them all this time I am in a mall Yeah I'm in more than ever it's the best series of any of the combined that's coming from a fun trying to be objective but it's just it's wonderful it's a whole new level for them it really is what is it that's invigorate and you know the seach of the most is you know regardless if it's not filming the we'll show you the most What is it nothing of the kind you know go away and then come back together like items just yeah yeah which I think yeah I think so and Jim's in a good place Vic Grace is in a good place with his art and his family Bob's happy and I think I think the climates write some Daphnis you know with the political climate Breck's it's you know the economy people askin I think people want to risk a prison and I think I think they provide I think it's wonderful thing the grit thing about Vic and Bob is that Vick would slowly increase the all but towards dogs eyes and and ops just you know that whole thing that happened in the one thing in the last year in Germany but then Bob reels it back a bit with his sort of direct comedy and his his is slightly surreal but it's more grounded so that of grit tain like is this something that they work on just to try to attract or is it this is what we do if you look at you look if you don't and they just do what they want today what they find funny they write in technique is quite straightforward and Bob goes to Vick's house and he does the writing and typing. Vic will stand up and do bits and then bubble Gee I got that out. So it becomes physical Yeah and then it's far more physical and then you think so Bob just all the writing and whatever makes them both laugh hill right down and it might just be a phrase for this series I didn't have a script at all because last time you did didn't yeah I was absolutely welded to it is not because of the trust you know I think the show me more of. Not putting words in their mouth but I think there's so many more create if than previous obviously the never seen me before and we did the Christmas special in 2017 and you know that went down well for me and then the 1st series the saw me. Bringing bits from you know doing bits for me for my character which they included and that's the good thing about Vic and Bob the very very inclusive and open if it's funny they'll put it in and it's not for you out you know because you know for you as a someone now as well as working in comedy to have these titans of the comedy saying to go yeah that's good let's have that in there and give you the credit for it well what they do is they laugh I mean there's no positive feedback as an laughin is that so if they laugh in rehearsal and the crew in the cast laugh then it's in you know it's only couple times where one of them's come quietly to me and said I don't like that but on this series I there were some bits that that I wasn't happy about that I didn't think the character would say are. Bob and Jim were both very happy to write will think of something you know certain characters are certain character names because a there's upset pattern now that I come on the stage pretending to be controllers remain to have to watch I know I can and I can't remember off with them to. So a lot of what's the night yeah the new series of pick in Bob's Big Night Out His tonight on b.b.c. 4 from 10 o'clock we'll hear more from. Absolutely. The 2nd piece is in the Daily Mirror and I find this fascinating and if it hadn't been for the fire were nowhere near full of I would've thought this is an ample food York there's a farm in just outside Moscow right and they've got cows Ok now they've had problems in the winter with milk production. But some to do with the weather right so what they've done is they've got you know the virtual reality headset Oh yeah they like big masks and the put them on the car was seriously so the put these on the cows and what they're doing is it's the cows can see red Ok and in the summer that red makes them feel happy because the more perceptive to read in their color spectrum rather than greens and yellows So the see this red and it makes them produce the milk because they know how you place why don't they just play the movies. It's been reported the scientists in Mumbai have developed a new hangover cure what is it basically consists of 2 thirds pair a quarter sweet line and a 10th coconut water and what I don't like really good at all so I don't was not a little bit to cut it so I was in a little and then. Well the flavors are real but apparently also tears nice on like some of the suggested remedies go on I don't know their memories are just as what's in the article and what other the tomato juice was the one new mum used to swear by tomatoes with a bit of Tabasco sauce and it's only Bloody Mary now as I got the terrorists now right here just got it I'm going to always get drunk you get no hangover then do it . To help us Please point us out to those people because they're always reticent to come forward because they go on their own if you know someone or facts you when you want to call on and you want to tell your story as a shout and look up on a bit of time we have I spoke to Tony on Friday when workshops but I was with him I had. You don't have a result it's not something you would purchase when you did the big show unless she had children with Europe why not let me party rings acceptable a glue is partly ring everyone let's celebrate the fact on b.b.c. . Well we know it's not long before Chris was due it were only 4 weeks of Christmas not long at all and most recent thinking about presents we're going to buy for the warms up we love now where all used to shop and big stores aren't we you know got to help the town places but small shops approving the strength the numbers now our brains were too small business owners in my hometown of such feel about how their idea of getting together to support each other in business is growing legs it's doing amazing stuff now Catherine lines runs all the words and she sells cards and pictures while all the ladies boutique but is Boudreau I would go and speak to them but this shop before Lily took over and renovate it it made it fabulous used to be a kind of haberdashery for all kinds of things in the east to be able to sell cards I think really still gets people common enough going for cards. So of just if I would do a few Christmas cards just to see how they would go or so there's a bit of a cross over there so who got a few all about words cards and Betty's beautiful so how important is a collaboration when you're a small business owner in a place like search for well that we try our best to support local people and where we can start local people's where just by accident we keep stumbling upon more and more local people that make absolutely beautiful things to sell in our shop even as much as the wreath on our door is made by a local lady and so we are really all about shopping call and stay in La called In Search field and this really did happen by accident in it because a lot of people who order from me need to my to collect from rather than just knocking on my door teatime. And it was great I asked Lily if could they call an issue up to collect the pictures of the cards and really agreed which then gets more people looking in a shop hopefully So that's how that came about we didn't kind of set out to have cards in here today and then from there a wonderful designer in Darlington houses. Has opened their 1st shop this week it opened and they needed a card person soley recommended me so therefore we got cards over there in the least got some bags and accessories over there as well and it's really lovely shop so this is a sea change with you know the way retail is gone because we are you the big retailers sort of pulling out a high street and pulling out the smaller towns is this the way for for you your size of retailer to sort of maximize and bring in Katherine and to have that collaboration of retailers I think it's a very much more personal affair with the shopper as well you come in Hey and you get a chat you get attention you get help get was the day I went to high street and I went to a shop and not one person said hello to me and I was just like I was wandering around in a thing in. This won't happen in my shop like that's the difference and I think people are starting to enjoy that mall and even open a gift at Christmas if it's something personal if it's something that's come from from the heart someone from someone else and that's much more special than just picking off the shelf What's your biggest challenge as a small retailer in a small town it can be done and probably keeping up than then Tim and so very lucky in the sense that we've had such a fabulous dot that we've only been open to you know hop but we use Facebook Instagram to very much keep that alive and still post an every down stories and so on and social media really gets the attention of our audience. And that helps bring people in and bring people to set field not just our shop but all the other destinations to come to in such failed Christmas you know if you say leave the lot of people looking for Christmas presents is there enough room in the market for online shoppers in the big out of town retailers and small retailers like yourselves Well there's always going to be an online presence but. I just feel that we're the kind of place where you come out for a day out and you stumble across a little shop like I was and you find beautiful things and you come back again and again and again where is you just don't feel the need to have that loyalty to a high street shop and it's just much more personal so you're going to find comedy or can you tell us what's going on and we are doing an f I should show in the village hall in the park hall in century and so we did one last year to raise funds for the guides who a lot of them go traveling around the weld and but not only we do we put on the fashion show we invite all the businesses to have stalls make an event and event of Christmas shopping and we have live entertainment and each ticket comes. Wine and it means Pi So it really is an evening of any semen and phone and champagne you know just a boat as well and. I don't try to be it just seems to happen like I do I do enjoy it so you're good for me you know where you get tell us when the events on and if you are going the thing of December so choosing the 3rd of December at the parish all over your collaboration between small businesses to me big or bigger offer and it's just happening right across to the side County Durham North Yorkshire It is 40 minutes of 5 b.b.c. Let's get you latest headlines on big cities with Annamarie a Cleveland police officers 100 a written warning after confidential documents about paedophiles were found dumped outside of his Hartley pull home and top chefs pay their tributes to Gary Rhodes who has died suddenly at the age of 59 just Frankland has Wednesday afternoon sport it will United have come firm that defender Peter Kay your saw is likely to miss Sunday's f.a. So join me in such a nice change to morrow night I feel like. This Christmas. It's gonna feel it and I'm nor that it's going to Christmas cause me throughout. The night in. The throat. It's not so it's just I'm sounding cruel or science or Though it's not so yeah yeah I've never had never at any time I go cool I feel it feel. I think I might need a good last image to. Fisherman's Friend or a victory for you of some description old skill or other lozenges are available I can't name any though. I don't know what. I was driving about a note about old it in a car and I tell you what was amazing in day it's plain It's awful it's measurable is going to stay pretty miserable through this evening overnight that's why there's a Met Office warning out for this rain continuing on and off through the night cause and some disruption a few on the roads for instance or below spray the big puddles I don't want to roads may well floods as well but having said that the rain should tend to become more Patsy through the course of the night but the rain never that far away through the evening and overnight temperatures no lower than 8 Celsius 46 fall and I called northerly wind as well tomorrow morning then it's not a promising start so I went in when they stopped for the day but the rain should gradually start to clear the way so it was clearing most places by lunchtime the afternoon and then dry up and greater but coming. Much cooler and see temperatures up to about 9th Celsius tomorrow which is 48 fall and hate not a great deal different from the overnight figures and through the afternoon as we get that blatant bit colder weather coming down from the north the numbers will start to fall away and tomorrow night it's going to be a cold one that we want to show as near the coast and inland areas will see a Touch of Frost and that colder weather set to stay with us then years ahead into the weekend course to parts kitty cats want to show some time to time many places will be dry temperatures stuck in the family in single figures as we head into the weekend and cold enough for Touch of Frost overnight so certainly dry air over the next 3 days but colder with it I like that this morning walk 'd to school I get all my inspiration for life but I want my 4 year old twins to school in the morning and Alexander said to me this morning I said Daddy Daddy I would love to live in a snow globe. So it does look like fun that said it will be fair yes it just I don't know God when it snows so it's very similar here but it's not as. What number was it guess the number or 80859595 Now you said all this we go to just replaying an incredible story that I got told on Friday from a County Durham and who is Life is so varied and has been so interesting it's unbelievable really really is unbelievable Tony God he's the type of character lives life to the full is that he's open is on his downs he's done all sorts he's been a big cage dancer got a prime minister is even been an ice hockey star for Darren what should it believe in bombers now yesterday Tony told is about talked about his time when he was in the police force and you rest in the miners' strike now today he's talking about how we move from being in the police to becoming a close protection officer when you come to the end you know of your time in the police because you to the fascinating chop to me you were the protected prime minister Yeah yeah yeah it's one play Sergeant that she was called at that time she ended up paying and the highest ranked female officer few years later I mean bear in mind when I had that talk from her it's cooler with the Hill in that low paying knowing 7770 year there was still a women's place department in every force that had a separate department for women offices when I 1st went to say I'm one of my 1st shifts I was troubled with to fail offices to look after them on the shift and they were the guard and there were the say you know there are was it you know half year old and you had 2 women who had families who were in the twenty's and thirty's and I was assigned to sit in a car with them to look after that it's just bizarre how you know saw thing in back to that that conversation that she had inspired me to then call 33 years down the road well towards the end of which he was I think I did about 15 years on the. Protection side and saw. That far down the road and then walking around with the prime minister a lot of covenant ministers and a lot of significance down in in London around the royals and saw that 1000 in the 2000 Tojo believe I was assigned the royal protection side when the queen in the tube and became more and ironically one of the 1st places the way it was saved so I was like you know I was I was there with r. And then ended up in Durham which values in quite nicely at the minute is well it's quite unusual how things link because one of the bits of the visit when when from say I'm over to I think a block off. Course that's when we start to look at the headland and doing their turn the tide project and so she went in there and we don't walk about in Durham and then up to the castle and I remember that's the 1st time I ever met Norman Cornish he was in the line up to meet us and I had just a little bit of a chap with him because he was a bit nervous about me. And. Sort of now put in residence for the norm Coney centenary year so it's quite quite bizarre with things like that your life is full of coincidence Yeah Ok Do you see that because you know you we played you know now and it just falls to deplane is how a lot of things yeah it. And it obviously a lot of things if anybody's heard the elevator pitch I did with paid a baron. And he alluded to in the article I did a number of jobs whilst I was in the place outside which is. I did a bit about him since he's buying so put him down said oh well we'll not go into that a witch always told you there was no. Fortunately in those days there was no. Coverage of this lots of people I know on the most recent video there with a photograph of that I know there wasn't in those days tips like. How. It's quite a bit. Just to be honest I wonder did they. Being in touch with with sort of life outside the job because a lot of pay when they join the place that is their lives yes they live it and everything becomes just the place and it can be you know what initially it was isolating for us where you got your place club somebody is a kid growing up and the detective sergeant was the magician or at the Christmas you know the superintendent with Santa Claus you know Paul you had to have those because I wasn't then I didn't get to go to. The mine is welfare hall for the for the Christmas party. Where I did when I was a lot younger before we did during the job we had all you do all of that so the place basically mirror that but it's it is totally isolated anybody alone yet you got your place club so when you finish work you don't go to the pubs outside because you're a target so you go you play school when you retire you go back to the place called the pay big go have your pies in Payson have it done so whatever and you talk about the old days to the new crops it was to have just finished you know in the Tolly it's still in that that sort of Graham told edition painting Yeah yeah all right yeah so I was very much I mean I was fortunate with the I saw you that kept is pretty much grounded anyway which was you know it's quite quite a bizarre sort of concept play someone blue line and then tearing another one. It's amazing I saw it play close protection of the big cage dancer bang says he's done it all Tony God what a man who put you more of the story to moral on b.b.c. T.v. That's what we're all about just finding those people from our own in the woods who got really addressed and stories that you want to hear and that's what we're all about our big cities. It was a life threatening incident to not just those that live right next door to a fire station we want to have a balanced approach Nigel Farage has set out the brakes at parties policies for the general election he told supporters in Westminster he wasn't launching a manifesto because the word was associated with broken promises instead he was making a contract with the British people apart from leaving the e.u. Mystified outlined a series of policies including an annual cap on immigration of $50000.00 people a year the abolition of inheritance tax and the b.b.c. License fee and establishing 24 hour g.p. Surgeries he said that for his party breaks it was just the start not the end of a political revolution never before in this country has public confidence in politics politicians are electoral systems ever been lower than it is today at the breakfast party of the party of the new radicals that is who we are we want to bring politics and our democracy into the 21st century we genuinely do want to change politics for good. Next ambitious plans to develop a solar farm and one of the 1st carbon neutral sites in the country being considered today by Leicestershire county council they want to use the energy to power a county hall where a green off is a professor of energy systems at Lester's De Montfort University and explains what carbon neutral actually means an individual or a household or a company their net impact on the greenhouse gases within our atmosphere would be 0 so that means that all of the greenhouse gases that you caused to be emitted through your various activities when you switch on the gas fire or when you switch on the lights all of that can be reduced by doing something else that possibly help somebody else and in other news Tesla's launch of its new cyber truck pick up in California has hit a snag when the windows were smashed during a demonstration of their toughness Musk told the audience there was room for improvement in the design in the weather the cloud will increase its afternoon bring some rain and drizzle highs of 8 Celsius 46 Fahrenheit this evening the rain will move away leaving it dry for a time before the rain returns before dawn lows of 6 ounces b.b.c. Radio Leicester news. As a check on the road with the latest b.b.c. Radio left to travel now with Kiran Wilson thanks Marty more traffic moving well across the city and county did obviously have that early Winston on the m one around junctions 20 and 21 as you heard in the news that's all been resolved and traffic has now returned to normal county council works continue on the a 47 up Ingham road in Bush Bay because in Tempe traffic lights operating here not that busy at the moment I can see on the cameras around Station Road still got some road closures in place across the county baby road that's closed between Park b. And b.b. So Ashlan Insall b. And Watergate lane all remain closed due to flooding for now you've got the latest I'll have more for you it was 30 minutes and. The d.c. Radio. 2. Excuse was I mean 17 and temptation at 8 minutes past one and if you've just joined us by the way with me in the studio is Monica and dress for the marketing of the National Space Center and Jackie Dixon who runs twins that stands much to things because we've been talking about your role with Stoney Stanton parish council the other store you brought Borton with Christmas in mind and all the things we've been talking about earlier bags of Colleen this is a lovely story to be in this is something that you know about from your own village Yes I am one of my roles is and I've been a huge clip in the village and last year we started a new task which we're carrying out but way of making it last year we did it as a surprise so nobody knew that we were doing it palm and as. We got lovely lovely feedback so this year when announcing that we're doing it so that we can and ta gate of a Normal people basically what we Day is the children asked our members are asked to donate items that we can put in a bag. And leave on the door. That of either someone who's out in a someone who's been rebel someone who's lonely now I've lived in the village for are over 35 years so I have an idea where those people generally are it's the last year I said Right this is where way targeting. Where is this yeah. We're trying to open a bit more to the community so what we've done where we've asked for donations that are more catered for the out away so we've asked for capacity we've asked we would I start we don't want to go down the line of cans because obviously if they are unable to open a can I can't open a can we're not looking for. Just something that can be a nice tree I think we've put some steamed putting it into some steam puttings so soups have been eaten things about a say yes a then what we do is our members then walk around the village we don't knock the door we don't do anything we just leave them on the doorstep so that the following morning or the that evening or wherever and inside it the children members have made Christmas cards and it just says wishing you a lovely Christmas from Stan Stanton used to love the idea and we do that every year well we did it last year we're doing it again this year so. Last night with our members donated we've had soap we've had. This saves we've had it we have. Steam putting and things out that sort of thing yeah basically as we've always said basically we're doing that where actually our members are going to be making decorating some biscuits because the thing is we've got to be mindful of. It's got to be a quick thing because next week we're packing it all and delivering it we are members need to be quick they have me something quickly that they can make but then also that we can just put in a little bag that is going to be eaten for that say yes they can have a handmade biscuit in their own and things that say I just we just proposed that last night. On social media saying and if anybody else wants to donate anything they're welcome to do so but we have 50 bags that way we're going to drop obviously we've got to fill those 50 bags and also we've just said if you live in Stanley Stanton or if you know somebody who lives in Stanley Stanton and you feel that they would benefit from this kind gesture then to drop steady stance and use common message and we will make sure that they're included on our list excellent excellent with the environment in mind. Let's have a listen to Chris Martin all of us in every industry have to just work out what the best way of doing our job is the hardest thing is the flying side of things we're taking time over the next year or 2 to work out how can only be sustainable how can it be actively beneficial how can we harness the resources that are to a creator and make you have a positive impact our dream is to have a show with no single use plastic to have it be largely solar powered so I think it's a question of just accepting that you have to do your best not to be too overzealous in criticizing others because everyone will catch up with I think if you prove that it's easy to do it the right way so Chris Martin there is an interesting story because Coldplay are actually working with the Natural History Museum on thing you know and I think it's really exciting that a bomb that's got to a point in its career where it can make that decision that it knows it has a voice to talk to the world and it can make social change and so working in the Natural History Museum they've put the putting on these 3 performances but it's not just about playing the music from their album which again. They focused on. Making a very positive message through their music but it's about raising the profile of climate change and so I think they've made a concerted effort to look at their carbon footprint when they're touring because obviously when the band go it's not just the band members it's huge amounts of stuff and kits and to put on an international concert 440000 people you know the detrimental effect to the environment is something that they're started to consider and so they've made this decision and like I say I think it's really great that anybody that has that kind of a following for them to take a step back and just say how can I make a change what can my legacy Bay and Co plays legacy it could just be the song yellow but it could be that they get some other people not to beat people up about cut climate crisis but just to raise awareness of it how can we make a difference how can we understand because it's so confusing if you listen to political leaders if you listen to certain media outlets you don't know what to do you don't know what's going on and I think it's really important that if you know if you're going into the jungle or you doing all these things and becoming a celebrity use that for power use that for good and I just really love the fact that they're joining with the Natural History Museum and raising that that that story yeah I think that the problem is you know the scientists will talk about the facts politicians will manipulate the facts and that confuses people pardon the fact that you know a lot of stuff that you read on social media on any given subject is completely untrue in the 1st place so some people still believe there is no problem with the environment you know absolutely and some people believe the earth is flat but that's. For us to deal with on a daily basis and the problem is always going to be that we all need to take a little bit of responsibility for ourselves the when you see something on social media these days and you do you sometimes need to question and so I don't always take everything as read you know it's not as it is. It is very difficult for. For people to understand how we impact this planet Earth you know I represent an organization that is using space travel and exploration of other planets to better understand our own so we've got satellites that look out for things like tsunamis that will protect people you know we look out for the rising of the waters the temperatures because that will make a huge change to the way that we live our lives this science going on on the International Space Station that will make a massive impact positively on people's lives going forward so I think from a understanding how we protect our little tiny blue dot is is vitally important but not beating people up over it not helping them and helping people understand how they can live a fantastic life but leave a legacy that means they haven't created any harm and the concerts themselves all of the profits from the show he's got a client. Client it's an environmental charity So now anybody talking about it they're actually putting money behind it as well yeah absolutely a look at old saying if we possibly can that's for sure more conversation after this raving Max. I have a max on b.b.c. Radio Leicester and song. Scene minutes past one. Bullock And Jack is there with me in the studio and there is a bit of a Christmas theme it's been running all this week actually because we're already stands think about it lives were switched on last night unless the last for this coming weekend and Jackie creating Christmas traditions is something you want to talk about because we have obviously traditions of having a tree and those sort of things but then families might have their own traditions to you what this is that this is why I would sit talk about this because it's going back to the 1st thing of talk about presidents you know what can buy a child for Christmas what are they going to what are you going to really want stop and think for a minute what do you remember about Christmas money. I remember the excitement of waking up on Christmas morning and just it was just fun. What you might have the same thing Christmas morning you know waking up our member at a really funny things like car remember waking up the smell of bacon because you know my parents got up before me. So I was pretty well behaved I was waking up at 3 in the morning and smelling bacon because of you know because the sense is a really good for anybody and hearing choirs on the radio that mean one thing and then you know opening presents and taking as long as I possibly could to open them you know I mean if we talk about traditions. My mom my mom and I we would always have the midnight you could one present because we went to big night Mass you know I got to sing I love singing and so I would be trying to be as loud as I possibly could in the church I'm just loud anyway and yeah and we would always make smoked salmon 3 weeks in advance and we would always make Christmas pudding in September and Christmas cake so. It's very much about food I've noticed this is the thing and this is the thing that I'm trying to instill into my girl was is it's not about the things it's not about that it's about it's about that moment it's about the special times so I have friends that you know we do they do cinema every Christmas a they go to St. Yeah and I mean you have an alum is a child and you go into that as actually Christmas Eve treat you're a family you all sit together and you go to last year we started in a while we said by Christmas Eve My husband makes a fantastic Christmas dinner for this for 14 of. You know we have our dinner but last year the night before Christmas Eve We were sat at the table preparing our vegetables Normally he does it what i'm so we did it together we said and it was a it was live and you just chatting as I said I was a new tradition so that even here in the u.s. Has an interest in us what we want to say and it's and it is instilling those my parents and I spoke to my daughter I said what's your favorite thing about Christmas and she said Mommy the best thing he said Everybody is here. And it is it is love you lay your way very fortunate there you know where I've got my mom that lives down the road I've got my mother in law it's got my sister you know that lives down the right my brother that it's around and we are My dad is flying over from America this year which I'm so excited about so you know where my brother is getting married 2 days before Christmas so we've got so much going on this Christmas but it's going to pay off all about the family and and it and that's what I would I hope that as a society we can try and instill in our children that it's not about the 3000 pound Christmas list it's not about this when your when you have an age are going to look back and think oh yeah I remember the year I got and I've an 11 I'll tell you our times of change as well because as a kid I would remember that we would always in the evening watch the Generation Game or more come and watch on television you know what I don't think we even put our television on on Christmas Day Any No no we play board games on Chris Yeah afternoon I was called the Christmas dinner because I love doing that sort of traditions for us what are your traditions than belief yes my mum's just bought a cottage by the. Strength You know it's not a member a lot keep his cottage and so we used to we go and walk and feed the ducks. And I think it's very much about spending time together I mean we eat all goes as a family that used to be as a recommendation you know I'm pretty sure you can. And I definitely think it's about those moments that you spend time together this will be the 2nd Christmas that we've had in our new home with my partner but this will be the 1st time that my mom his mom and she's in her ninety's and he's going to drive down to switch collect and bring her out and she'll get to see the house and we'll get to have dinner together and we'll talk and you know it's going to be a lovely family experience and that is definitely without a doubt one of the more so for me and you know we we joke about panto but because of panto I only get Christmas day off so you know friends and family is the only chance of us all getting together so we make such a big thing about that and I think that's absolutely right it should be people think that it is it should be people and that's what I thought about talk about it today because it is think. Like you said earlier on Christmas has become so commercial that we forgetting the true meaning of just being together enjoying that quality you might also as she lived carving ananas herring with chocolate chips last year in that and she said it was so funny because we could ever anybody letters do what we wanted to because we had to have. Well let's finish with another nice Christmas story really could because this is one with the American Postal Service and it's a lovely story and it's not you know when I was looking for something to talk about this is the one that made me weep at my desk and I'm quite a strong individual so the u.s. Postal Service is doing a program that's about adopting It's called us Operation Santa but it's adopting letters so what they've done is they have found areas of America where children are writing wish lists and letters to Santa we all do it and the Postal Service gets these letters but there are children that come from areas where they've associated 90 percent of the children won't get breakfast they only get low. Because the school provides it so these are families that are suffering really badly at this time of year all throughout the year so what you can do is anonymous Slate You can go on to their website you can adopt a let's say you choose the latter if you don't know who it's going to you just know what I'd like for Christmas and I went and had a look at some of these letters and some of them are about experiencing time with families is about I want my daddy to come home you know and and it really is people are just want something that's so simple they don't want 3000 pounds they don't want nicer things they just want really simple gifts so what you do is she buy those gifts or you try and create something that feels that wishlist and you take it to the Postal Service and they will send it to that individual is completely anonymous you're not allowed to know who it's to the person who receives it doesn't know who it's from but it's just about giving to somebody that is less fortunate yourself and I love it I think it's a fabulous thing I think I think hopefully the role model might think about doing that in this country as well be nice to think that somebody was at work when that thank you so much both of coming in very Christmas I want to see them have a. Great Christmas whatever you're there with your friends and family and we'll see you in 2020 thank you thank you. So hung. You. And as he could. Have you. But I don't see any problems with it it's just what play yes is a little bit. What does quite mean a Leicestershire fire and rescue services said lessons can be learnt from this and perhaps the plan could have been written in a clearer a fashion a consultation period.

David and seeing the epic performance way by Queen on the 15th of July 1985 I also saw sadly did not get to see the clash busking on the streets of Glasgow buff you people have got in touch and we'll be telling you more about that but later on in the program I'm going to set the ball rolling with picking one of my favorite pop music I was there moments away back in 1977 A mate of mine who at the time what for Virgin Records cold often said do you want to go and see the Sex Pistols play alive it did not have to wait long for my answer and the only problem was that they were playing a gig on Christmas Day and a beer kilo in Huddersfield by the name of I even hose it was one of those kind of made evil Knights of their own table places hence the name now you can imagine my mother's face when I walked in and told of I was missing the family Christmas dinner because I was going to see a punk rock band in 1977 and they your shot of all places but I don't Ellen a car with mommy of course we didn't get there Elle enough to see the gig that they played for the children of the striking firemen that particular time but when they took the stage later on that was absolutely devastating everything I had read about the Sex Pistols being fantastic musically having great sounds and being totally and utterly outrageous on stage they were over 100 times over it really was one of the best going moments of my life I was there moment for me and here is one of the songs on that particular night it was a 17 song set and this was number 5 from the album Never mind the you know what this is the post office and the M I. Our remember being backstage Ivan hose and how the food and asking said vicious for his autograph Nancy sponge and has a legal fan although she wasn't up to it with fame of course that was still to come a acid was just for his autograph he told me to. Go away I'm paraphrasing what exactly said to me but John lithe and Johnny Rotten as he was then was in fantastic form and the personals were absolutely magic and then meals later there's a very famous photographer who used to work for the enemy called Kevin Cummings and he published a series of 4 graphs taken Ivanhoe was on that particular night Johnny Rotten wore a brilliant T. Shirt which said Never mind the rich kids we're the sex personals and over a shorter in the 4 graph you can see me standing precariously on a table in the background and that is to say was a real I was there more and that's the theme for the program tonight do you have a pop music was there a moment in our E.P. Is more than just I went to a gig it was absolutely fantastic and with a great team a little something a little bit more than that and there are still a little enclave buying says we had seen Steve cack it play the royal consul in Glasgow and it turned out he was staying in the same hotel as US is my power would not believe me when he was coming out of the lift coming don't for breakfast the following morning he says but we shared a lift with him and talked to Steve about the glory days of the Apollo and the all greens Playhouse and that comes from Alice to little enclave by an alley Wilson says I remember rehearsing with Mike Scott for a potential job with a band called another pretty face that would be in the late 1970 S. I'm guessing and the dark dark and dangerous Edinburgh rehearsal room 4 years ago and thinking that boy is very good indeed he will go far as the room was very dimly lit but he still insisted on wearing sunglasses in the rehearsal and there my fear of a my in my fellow B.B.C. Radio Scotland presented Gary Robertson is listening to the programme and he says a real I was there moment for him was at the Apollo a 977 in 179 rather who he saw Abba for the 1st time what made it even more amazing he says it was the foster guy ever went to attain the age of 12 so do you have a favorite pop music I was there moments in as a text to 0295 send us an email to Billy Sloan show B.B.C. Dot co dot U.K. And on Facebook and Twitter the septs is quite simply the. Sloan sure how we back through the hazy mists of time I used to play records by fantastic artist who formerly was the lead singer of a great band in the 1970 S. Cold the doctors of madness who were a huge influence on the Sex Pistols away back in the day the gentleman in question is a guy Cole wrote just strange is a very multifaceted and talented gentleman and they over the course of his career he's made some great records he's also the butt of a Powell career of an actor appearing in movies like Batman Robin Hood in the Prince of Thieves The Gangs of New York and how reports are to name but 4 he's got a brand new musical project which is coal Richard strange performs the songs of the reeds and what he's done is basically going on the road with a band featuring members of it again David Bowie Steve Farley and Ian Hunter scope and they're going to run the country sadly not so far coming north of the border of the doing a 6 day U.K. Tour which kicks off in whole in the 21st of September but fingers crossed they might find the time to actually get north of the border and let us see where it's all about but there aren't just strangers going to be performing the songs of the reeds including classics like satellites of Love Street hostle song we can't dance and walk on the while say to name before and also this one this is a kind of promotional single that's been pressed up in the recording sure to can a pave the way for the forthcoming tour and see we think of us this is such a strange and his version of the lyric composition my friend George. You know it's really great to hear it just strange back in the recording studio once again send me an e-mail just totally out of the blue I haven't spoken to him in our number of years but the good news says if like me you're a big big fan of the doctors of madness I know that Jim Carey and Charlie Burchill were huge fans of the band a way back in the day is a going to be back in the should be with adults as of madness they have a brand new record company promise he's going to get it to me and they in the meantime he's going to be doing average a strange performing the songs of the reeds and thus a track which originally appeared on a great you Lou Reed album in 1000 efore cold new sensations the big single from it was a brilliant song called I love you says on Bob Brown you Vashon of a great song What's the right to strange and a version of my friend George if you want to go and see this show as a see the 68 U.K. Tour kicks off and haul in the 21st of September to find out all about on the website and they may. To say fingers crossed we can see riches train performing the songs of the lyrics and Scotland a bit later on in the year OK Billy Sloan on B.B.C. Radio Scotland I ask you Have you had any incredible I was there pop music moments were getting a lot of great show Sunday Declan McConville says my uncle mama Cruden said seeing Neil Young bust in Glasgow and seeing Johnny in the self-abuse of the live in Howard's tree in the Mars bar and of course not very famous a ever sort of role in the 1970 S. And Neil Young was in the city and he was wandering along Gordon Street looking for the Bank of Scotland for some bizarre reason and ended up certain bits the camis which And that's particular time was a right you know say the main door of central station he basically said don't put the heart don't go is acoustic guitar Oh and the busking was a great clip of and each of me can catch a bit later on in the program and there really was a very memorable moment and joining Castlemilk says my memory would be at the Apollo in run fuel for the Led Zeppelin gig in 1972 I was there John I was sitting in the balcony he says when the allegedly cracked the ceiling decibels He says the sun was soloed he says my ears can verify it up because the next morning they were still tangling on my way to work and also a quick mention to Drew one guy who gets in touch and says seeing mortar heads at the Glasgow Pole in 1002 my 1st of a gig he says I left nothing the next day at school as I couldn't hear a bloody thing because my switched off ringing keep all your suggestions coming and all your nominations coming for your favorite music I was there moments and as it takes to alternate 5 an email to Billy Sloan show B.B.C. Very talented lady by the name of skin it's good news for skunk Anansi fans because they're going to be kicking off an 11 the Iraqi tour on the 17th of August at Brixton Academy and they're heading you know where they're going to be alive in the water column in Glasgow on Saturday the 31st of August let's hope the song is in the Senate comes from a great compilation album released on way back in 2009 called smashes and trashes and this is skin on lead vocals with skunk a Nancy and a brilliant song called Squanto. I'm telling you for somebody his look so scary when you see on stage she really is an absolute pussycat one of my favorite female performance she of course is skin from the band skunk and I would say I'm not from the smushes and trash compilation album on the one little Indian record label in 2001 and a great song called squander necessity of the going to be live at the academy in Glasgow on the 51st of August Billy Sloane on B.B.C. Radio Scotland asking on the program tonight do you have a favor I was there Paul music MOMA. Borrowed the whole he says the place was round so only St along with millions of others and of course I'm asking you where you one of the lucky people they got to see the clash when they did the famous busking tour across the streets of Glasgow and they keep them coming sends a text hail 25 an email to police launch or a B.B.C. Doc who don't you can on Facebook and Twitter the SEPTA's Billy Sloan sure. And March I think it was or out the Bartley Center in Brooklyn New York City they had the annual Rock N Roll Hall of Fame concert and of course a couple tracks from there the 25th anniversary show coming up in live in the interest of it Leroy on the program but in February of 2019 as I said this band were inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and they were in pretty good company because they were rubbing shoulders with the likes of Roxy Music The Cure and Janet Jackson to name but 3 and it was in recognition of an incredible musical legacy the band are still going strong led by vocalist Collins Blunstone and keyboard player Roy dodge and of course I'm talking about the legendary zombies and this is a song written by Mr Argent from the I'm a $964.00 Debbie album which was a great record called begin here and the single got to number 12 in the U.K. Charts and number 2 can you believe in the American charts and really as one of the all time classics this is the zombies and the sound of she's not there. Absolutely fantastic stuff saw the band a few years ago when they played live in the well to be seen sucking hole she recreating their classic album Odyssey and Oracle from 4 struck into last number huge fun of the vocals of Colin Blunstone that's the zombies from 1964 on the classic single she's not they are asking you on the program tonight do you have a favorite music moment and I'm not just talking about going again going to be in fantastic I'm talking about something a bit more than that you know something truly extraordinary happened at a gig or a you know something a little bit historic even if it was only in a local sense that people talking about it and the years that followed or even you were maybe just strolling down the street you encountered your favorite pop star you'd have. Conversation is a chance encounter and it made a bit of an impression on you send all of your nominations and we're trying to cram as many as we can and before the end of the program and a few moments time you're going to hear from a band who I was very lucky enough once upon its Believe it or not to play the drums for a way back in 1992 the legendary Spinal Tap we're having a drum audition in a place called the borderline club in Charing Cross Road in London and I was lucky enough to get my name on a list of 9 potential dramas who are additional to play with a top who of course have a history of. Calamities I guess you could call it before Ling the dramas you either die in a mysterious gabbling out accident you spontaneously combust halfway through a song when you're onstage us just something weird and wonderful they've had a whole host of dramas who would make grizzly ends and they decided to have a drum edition when they were releasing their album Break Like the one day in 1902 and I was lucky enough to get on the list and you went along on the day and you played along to 90 seconds of the song I'm going to play in a few moments time and you had to fill in the drum track and I'll tell you all about that at the end of the song but let's start with a trike from a band who are the real life income nation offspring or top and choose the one I would turn to the hydrant was going in for a 45 years of gig going for some bizarre reason I had never previously uncombed to the live music of kiss on stage but I reckon that this was probably going to be one of the last times the Bunbury We're going to be doing a few UKI and European tour so I thought we'd go along and check them Oh and I have to see it from fast to last I thought they were absolutely fantastic hilarious I could not take my eyes off the stage they were up in the air on joint platforms they had more fireworks than I've seen even Edinburgh's hold many Those are great but for Paul Stanley KM off the stage and the trapeze ring and landed on the satellite stage halfway up the whole it's just that the mix in this I thought they were absolutely hilarious fantastic I could not. My eyes off the stage and I'm no lucky and very glad to say that I have seen kiss on stage it was a great set and this was one of my favorite tracks that comes from an album released that way back in 1984 which was they were 12 studio release it was a record called Adam allies and this is one of the best songs of the hydro and choose tonight this is the sound of kiss on the pole Stanley composition Heaven's on Fire. Was right so I go on stage in front of 300 people and their deeply 90 seconds of that classic song big bomb from the suspend or top all in 1004 now I've never played the drums before in my life I thought I'm going to mess up at least try and mess up and tell him so I did my best for what seemed like the longest 90 seconds of my life and then spinal Derek Smalls Nigel Tufnel and Davidson happens we're certain up in the cane of a trade of place in a row strong filmmaker. And the kind of held up scorecards a bit like what they used to do in the old days of the ice skating and I get a score for something like minus 15 and there's a great quote from a Davidson when he says what we liked about you Billy was that you managed to avoid all the old cliches like technique and I was one of the greatest compliments are ever been paid in my career as a music journalist and broadcaster the guy who won. The coveted role of being the next drummer of Spinal Tap should their current drummer at that particular time die in a mysterious gardening axe them or a spontaneously combust dances was a block from a heavy metal band in north London his prize was a British Telecom pager which he was supposed to wear on his belt and the next time they're trying to make a grossly and they were going to page him and he would immediately join the band and become a bonafide member of the legendary Spinal Tap B.B.C. Radio Scotland this is the brand new single from the very talented Britney Howard from the band the Alabama Shakes This is called Stay high. Yeah great stuff that's the 1st single The to surrender than fight for a forthcoming album which is going to be cold Jame released on the 20th of September the 1st of a solo release from the very talented Britney Howard from the band the Alabama Shakes and I greet you song Cold stay high beliefs long on B.B.C. Dot co dot U.K. Ok away but through the hazy muscle time in 2009 it was in fact I was lucky enough to go to the 25th anniversary of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame for a couple of tracks coming up from a in the 2nd hour of the program and there I was lucky enough for one time in one time all the to see the queen of soul the late great queen of soul the legendary Aretha Franklin and she was absolutely fantastic a special guest on the night were people like Lenny Kravitz and Annie Lennox to name but 2 and she performed with a full band enough their 3 piece orchestra and you can imagine how totally and utterly special that was so let's have a try from the queen of sort of the way for the legendary but by crikey is going to be playing a live at the Kelvingrove part Bandstand to kickoff you know the someone nice to event which starts not this Friday but next Friday or next radius as now and there this is one of the greatest of our compositions by compositions by the songwriting teen of Black Rock and the legendary how David this is a recent fragment on the classic $960.00 single I see a low pressure. Wound down to our Was was just. Luther Vandross and Janet Jackson the best things in life for a leash and I do love. Listening to B.B.C. Radio Sheffield with Simon lation we are in for Paula today and it is that time of the show so we have an on today's expert is while life expect and Professor how I'm Eunice stay in Rotterdam and he is he taking your questions all about wildlife so if you have a question for him give him a call 800 triple water 4949 or you can text is on 813 double 3 and start your message with the word Sheffield Welcome to the show You see I didn't see you. So question because the little bit of crazy weather that's going on how the wildlife how they're coping with how many thing called it has. Been really exciting because what's happening is that the winter birds come in and we get things like what we call the winter thrushes feel for. Red Wings and white swings and we get little finches called Brown brings which communes people's gardens they suddenly disappear but then everything else kicks off so all the flowers are coming through lots of stuff that really should be flowering in about a month or 2 months time is all comes through the birds are singing which is brilliant. Over my house recently I LIVE IN know in the south of Sheffield and when I was a kid there were no birds of prey at all because without a shot them or poison them nationally Yeah. It was whoa fantastic I've had we know that there are persons breeding I think breeding that lead us really which is to the north and they breed in the most fights in the south and you hear them and see the high overhead and they have this mewing call last couple weeks I've had 2 sightings of a pair of poses each time almost a rooftop party it was post some pictures which I hope they send you the link so you can see these and then I actually just circling and circling and circling so I think there might be nesting even closer to my garden look you know that is really exciting but yeah I love it but that's that's an early that's a breeding thing they're displaying over their breeding territory OK OK I think I was because I was thinking suppose the just the temperature. That we start. You know what do we do what's going to happen to them because that will come in a hellishness garden the thing is to keep feeding and make sure you've got plenty of stuff out there. And we've talked before about different types of food you can have Paula always gets excited when I say that you have a. Problem. So there you really go for a long. Flight. So the small person particular gets cold they lose body heat very quickly so you got to keep the fat the advantage of starting to breed as you might get maybe an extra brooding over the year which is important for small birds I think that libraries will start nesting sometime around that Christmas the risk is that you get hit by sudden cold snap yet and the like the catastrophic that I mean because what we surely want all the flowers like die in when they die yeah yeah you see of going to come out you know from here you sending. Flowers Yeah. Yeah yeah you know. I mean that said to see the other thing is we actually had a bit of a drought the 1st few waits and the catastrophic wildfires in place and I started with yet again I thought all this time here is just believe here I kind of been involved in this the city council when I was a city calls years ago and you can think is I deliberately someone's going to say last year I think I'm out and set fire to it but it's an indication of the drought right was for the yeah I think quite a few flowers come forward then gone because been so warm and dry they're not lasted as long as the norm last so it's kind of you know but it's a really exciting time you know things are happening birds are singing foxes are calling in Woods Yeah so listeners might have heard this sort of wild. Sort of and then screeching Yeah sometimes sounds almost like someone's being strangled I mean I've heard people fighting before cell we think there's something nasty going on their words and it's a fox or so they have busy breeding as well holding television rating and the toenails are toenails acquired folks at the moment so we can be feeding all the wild birds in our gardens What about all their animals is there anything that we do a lot of head jokes you know on the road should we be doing anything or just leaving them to carry on our if they're OK You can probably lead. But you can buy special little pellets of food for her chokes rushing out some you can buy if you want to spend a lot of money or you can make a hedgehog shelter which is quite good so find so much to come and they do work I've got friends who got them in the gardens and little you donate that well he's just like a miniature hot. So you know it's about put it near the microphone so listeners can . Find it's like little shirt then you cover it with dead branches and things and the hedgehogs go in this nice place for him to nice to. So that he can help them with that and leave if you've got a decent sized garden leave on tidy bits where the hedgehogs can overwinter so they go in and hibernate over winter so you need to have places like that but it is worth feeding them and the other thing is just cat food or dog food a little bit. World Food hedgehogs You might also get the local Fox if you want foxes and it depends but not everyone's keen on that but it can be exciting so there was something in the news last year I think about feeding Fox and it is saying it's bringing more into an area yeah should be doing it what Sure. I mean one thing is which I know local so well as just who I used to work with the museum is a star what is actually she's citee chuckled Darry Whitely is a mammal expert and he made a point many many years ago then sit Schaffel isn't the Fox The moving back in the already been there but they the city is spreading out over Fox habitat and the foxes are adapting to that we've also got badges one of my students a couple years ago did a big survey with listeners on badgers in the city and we have badges in the city center 3 o'clock in the morning outside nightclubs you know it's just weird and they've come back then after terrible persecution the problem with things like foxes The great thing is you know people see a fox and. Fantastic however. Wild animals. You trade in the south and if you go into a tomahawk they will come into the those things occasionally and then if you walk into a room the foxes come and it panics it's not aggressive it will avoid you but some unfortunate ice and usually a panicked reaction by the fox and the general because we got bit too complacent and we think they're packed and then. YEAH THIS IS AMAZING do any of you have a question. In Wrotham you can get in touch you can call 1849 or text an 8133 and start your message with the word Sheffield Let's have a song and then we'll come back after this so. That was this to Miss Sacro cuming you decent listening to family bbc right Joe Sheffield only standing in for Paula today and with us we have Professor from Holland University and our wildlife life expertise in other him and he's just been talking to us about and the wildlife and how to protect them specially in this very peculiar weather at the moment and I wanted to ask what is the best way out of what is the best way of looking after even without the weather that is just put you food down what easy and just build your car i house for them is there anything else that we need to know that they need that we could not use for things I had childs much to hate any kind of WA Yeah because I have I have some commute and I just. I'm not 100 percent sure that I'm doing the right thing I mean really what you can do if you've got a garden you can. Manage the garden part is a wildlife garden yes a plumbing throughout the creating little bits habitats and stuff like that. With Paul for even a small can you can have a little what's havea. Right way to a big upon a big garden but also things like nest boxes for the purge which they also use roosting sites that when. Having different natural foods so you want with warm weather a lot of pollinating insects come out based on how the 1st record listeners sentence make. People seem bees in the garden they have to have flowers so you want to early flowering flowers and stuff like that so it's really think you had them planning how you can deliver what the wildlife needs Sharon from Fox Hill has called in and she wants to have a chat with you about foxes in her garden No it's actually about Guru square the we are going well. I would tell him about a month or so ago that whole of the city after many years it seems Cordoba house feed is they disappeared. Remember you know yeah yeah yeah definitely mystically something really gone wrong is still not there you know. And a bit of it getting there but actually where I just quit all that actually lead to you know being mature you don't know when it's yeah mostly Yeah if you want round when the leaves are falling from big trees and you'll see a big round. Thing a little bit like a magpie snap often big and it's like those nose leaves in it and that's what we call a dry the squirrels dry and they breed in a dry but they also have a overwintering dry so that's where they go in winter. You have got sheets and so you think that we are yeah at the back of our school a little lots of cheese and we can see actually big yes. I thought I. Always think that she and I thought that's where them squiggle that yeah yeah but you just not seen them they've. Been wrong I think they will come back and this worth again once ELISA on the trays listening out because the squirrels when they are mating get very very noisy make all sorts of peculiar territorial grown since squeaks and things so he saw here a really odd noises up your trees yeah that's probably what you've got rather think I think they will come back I can I think you know she was talking about yeah yeah we used to see lots of Pia Fortunately we'll see lots of killed in the room. That we lost a lot of her childhood church of had a really bad time in the last few years for all sorts of things that we are doing to a wider environment they have really struggle and that's why people with them in the Guards it's so important to try and support them and nurture them yeah I just I said I thought mold that increase it got Yeah I was a little great it's a blue state matter Yeah yeah you go yeah yeah that's one positive thing that's great I mean things can change see how sparrows which used to be really really common when I was a kid. 10 years ago suddenly plummeted in the mouse they seem to pick up a bit now and people again people can help if you have your roof done and all the little spiral nesting places go stick a sparrow nest box up get it out go to saw a sparrow think he is but we think a lot more about that that someone posted there because I'll keep informed being about OK too it's good to hear from you thank you OK thank you so much Erin lets you know if those squirrels come back and Dave has been in touch and he says we have badges digging holes in our football picture what can we do. There yes what I would suggest you to do is go online and find the south your budget group. Or failing that the chef in a rotten Wildlife Trust and contact them for advice right if you've got badges if they just digging you can clear the diggings away but if you have got a set then the status is strictly protected and you have to take legal advice on it and do it properly OK so. Apparently we've got so yeah I'm here to. Tell us all about it yeah yeah see again I mean if listeners go on to my blog which is all one word Ian's walk on the wild side you will see a whole of pictures of these fantastic birds which were in my garden last week. And they are they are big bright green parrot with a great big red B. . They started to spread in the London area possibly when they escaped from the film set of the Humphrey Bogart firm The African Queen and then they spread if you execute gardens you see hundreds of them which company saying but they've been in our area since about 1900 they are spreading the numbers are increasing and I do want to know where they are and we have got an online survey going on so again total asses know where you are seen them they are amazing. Striking to lay our stunning before people just don't expect to see anything you know that's not right I didn't I didn't as I said I didn't expect them to be able to survive while you know that fact is just absolutely amazing Yeah and. So we've been talking about the great outdoors What is your favorite What's your fave with the best place. Life if you want easy while life for the someone who maybe isn't some open experience the best place probably is the more what and center in the valley the R.C.M.P. What uncensored However if you are a bit more energetic my favorite spot is almost the big more and rams the mall and the House of the West to Sheffield and walk a long white hedge and you. See or even curb or actually see some fantastic stuff to see ravens tumbling sea ring goes will we tears curlews or source things can I just say and now because we're drawing to a close one of things I get a lot of a big buzz out of is listeners can talk to me afterwards and I get people writing to me through my shelf filled newspaper columns and I just want to say hello to Mrs Elsey cousins who work play who are no listeners but doesn't found then so high I'll say my OK OK. I am definitely going to be getting on to your blogs I want to see the parakeet and that got me to think if I saw one of those in my garden I would think I was someone's pet Scotland Yeah that's what I would have thought so I don't why you travel look at those pictures tell us again what your website address says. On the wild side all one word no spices and that will find me that's lovely thank you OK I'll take care thank you so what do you feel like you can now yes look after the wildlife a little better around you really must definitely because as I said before I didn't think about doing the Horton stuff my Yeah about doing that maybe put out some water even if I haven't got water for very important just water like bowls of water so I'll just do that which I didn't honestly I didn't know how to do that I didn't think about doing that before and specially with this weather being so strange it's been really weird and I've been worried about them thinking how are they going to cope because it's if the frost just comes over it's going to be really quite devastating for them this time last year we're in the middle of the US from yeah yeah this week I don't know if I just don't know yet or now dear you don't really don't know now there I thank you so much here well it's been an absolute joy Thank you. Shares his memories of the early days we go into music just for them to show more reflect on his late friend and band mates the joy of having 2 guys I worked with noise children who George is my little man and reveals what keeps him motivated you still got to prove even to yourself. It's to go through. Tonight from 10 on B.B.C. Scotland. Back to back to off the ball in the 1st hour we've been talking about your best RB moments unforgettable for states year New Year West left for Scottish football on the worst piece of music ever my guests today are obviously lovely times here with me because it's a short I'm just 11. And it's all the troika who knows I have a part but what are. Just looking to forgot what I was writing the letter. From the big issue I'm a big key to all this is the brains behind the bar tweak so that at the moment you are chained to the odd couple of Scottish football. Shell Tech Crunch we had to look to the show in the role because our teams get what but you sort of only shown to the sixty's returning what about radio or turn the me there's a lot happening today don't have the lines all right takes an emailed remember quite you know we're told about no we do indeed have Keith Wallace. But don't you can inspire him to draw an award winning cotton move get Paul might me editor of the buy gusher in a black man united fine here get any questions for the guy get fired on but I want to know your number one Dobby moment an unformed gamble false date and some crack of skin on your New Year's wash for Scottish football on 12 is in your opinion the wost but of music of all equal to 95 in a text to Camille off the ball B.B.C. Don't go to your game I'm going to disagree but I spare some right away he has suggested we buy music that we do indeed have lightened up just in case and it was must as well Scottish football very much answers agree I think US is one of the good it is for bowl songs of all but that's past and he said it was the wast song and a study I was 14 and I still suffer from depression because of a. Loss and I'm going to come January the learn get goosebumps just up was a big story. Song about something I think it's still an absolute classic. Alison said every time there's a stone game if it was a ballad you'll see one of them maybe understates out well known come home to. An uncanny resemblance is the legitimacy of the ability of a genius but I wouldn't be at all but certain question the Scotland squad of this team I think Rafi told us once that the team at all quite even one of my top of the popes I did not vote knew about so when the stevia bowled today we jumped in a bit because he was on the stage to NOT an initiative on a course and day or as he's going to Wembley with a ton of hot spots what could he sounded like great to have a question about the only guy that subpoenaed in the same episode of Top Of The Pops twice that night not to go but anybody that's not off the ball troll comes up on you like my. Be even more more than a. Biannual is one is of it to your goodness I was appalled I'm going with by on your every 6 months as a right. So anyway if you get all the stuff going to dust the goodie we have all said and done to be Mormon gypsies tromps and thieves getting played Love Street for the visit of Morton. Mellor to go away we know all the pond are stacking the air for national in front of them to remember all our oh yeah it was I was like a puff and I didn't bond to the phone call and say you gotta get in or not right force dates on domain J. Of potential guests in the studio I'm not even Scott and he's fast and good rhythm it is a sign the sign that's a little high it was already there I don't have no time at the demise of friend of mine went on a false date with his no wife some good after a very nice meal he reached 400 crossed the table and continued his charm at one point his date said something amusing and does he give a snotty type of waffle a giant bowl game of his no response and line get on the bottom of our hind. As I say no to big money for over 30 years but a style gets robbed for. A Not for Steve and I but deal Soledad you call it is a study by Steve R. Steve's For example if you know my story I spray I don't know how or what song Everybody Wants To Rule The one old by TS For feels his rank are often says almost all of them bottom fun and hot for Cho and he says a lot how can you really Tom and all the crew we have and all that but we but a country and western stuff again I don't mind and this is a finger nails on the chalkboard job if you're old enough to know what up means and so courts but he no money it's always song by the late gimme to join. Did. You. See this whole scene from Caesars and the song is hugely popular with teenagers at the moment why a dunce big horse already earned all that was I a few years ago is that another 3 minutes it seems to be resurgent. Right. At more spectacular So we're going to just agree they have a part for a so-called Keith would you like yourself I don't like any country music so at the . Back of a song that unlike as tonight the whole genre a little thing oh yeah but I don't. Say you know what I do have Paul's right a deal like that I'm going to. Come across as a miserable in the house I'm really know about off screen on just one why should I go if I should get the gag as the level I get all the time when he read it was a candidate saw you know right in front of yes going to billing away art of. Short . It's an awful pain on an i Pod and I'm trying to recreate the Rangers goal with I haven't seen it already and all we know is it was Ryan Jack Yeah but a deflection to my favorite characters to draw OK Ryan Jack and Scott reading this hail us visit tortilla Baker Yes you must be getting off the sails I've just been told the ball went through Scott Brown's legs I thought it deflated a foam. This is the new information right OK well that's fine it still plays into the inside of his leg as then for me just given a ROD MACQUEEN to a new form has become parts because that's the thing I really want to find in the B.B.C. Is to be cupboards that will be clean does his ring just come to us from It's Always sounds. To me when there was something on sports the Navy said done Deaves commentating the done the game or someone and it was I broke and it was real McLean again in both games kicked off it seemed. Well why don't I don't know what I'm going off you if you come one on me a degrees F. Keith and look to studios beyond and I'll get lost when you're doing it just know that what if I saw it in the open it's basically days like today when it counted a life from my books because of an ongoing citation and basically comes out of the celebrity Google box episode as you get part born of Stephen Thompson McLean an enabler and the one number one called out and it all came to watch in the game. Believe the caller Yeah I thought they want you on that Rob's phone and a couple of them to the stairs or some like that so I was saying it was a. It's late night on the cover today and as of yet that will not put the company today and was born oh please just want to talk to him but also. Not much such I. Had to get off the phone to folks my worst piece of music I don't know nice See if you bought got must be awesome he lags by Z.Z. Top. She's got legs in those her knees and as I tease them right OK that's all right it sounds like all of these the tops of the top songs also in the C M So if you can imagine the top song it's not one right OK now to go and makes my skin crawl. Says assist Tracy who's got food poisoning she got food poisoning for Christmas already and she's And but he can oh shit going to get in the end it was relying on your bed. And she says I think it was the thought of those 2 she'd be singing it and of course the political intersection here the guy that doesn't it will be a discord flight be able to write yeah and he's only one but I'll be able. To go a lot was legs each patient at the time are logical and legs as well keeps right to force D. As well when I was applying to. Yours are showing. Their report on the something is nice but not now. Not sure what it won for and I was it was that sort of a heart an exam locked wards and dollars. I can. Run for the cats. If you can draw not how I honestly draw and I'll buy off you. Go on I don't know any team in a week I'm being told. Now did we get our 2nd or one poll No you don't mind your state or your state enjoy chop you not sure but you know of old Cain day where he says he used to have the right what was I hold again let's not look at gold it was a fella called a fan of cock right can I hold that Apollo L.R. Time I think I'll still fly anyhow he's of course changed and that you're sporting of any kind of cannot quit file Audrey's boyfriend and call the. Other guy I mean I think tentatively question is more complimentary thank you very much I don't know if there is boyfriend or you know and he's played by the side and I don't think I Nigel he looked as if he always plays the smug. Oh yeah just in a bit here later he had to be salt and pepper fun going on as well it's optional. Basically you put me in your letter or do you. OK good to go. With us we've got old Fred the bitch. And I'm I own 3 happen Amaya meantime don't repeat you know. What I. Generally don't like and. I once Reagan called Nations to remember that's a real name a Sollie L.L.C. I get all excited you know about a custom bike and. Both are not exactly I ask for your respects like. But here styles kid there's a story that's meek and Paul I don't know if you'll be tempted but that's all that you even. One button a day upon it only that he'll stay what's come in but it's going to be by counting and $21000.00 as the confidence cottons he'll still kind of like becomes even fled the bank of the bank metal Patni thing. And also that you're gonna be able to to the acquitted nippy paternalism to home P. a Laundry you had Neil McCann knew McConnell belly towards and a clock of his own he even a double warned one at one point when he died he said Keep your cell your number up she even gentleman what I know you have lost you know I used to have curtains Yeah I know if I tried to just be an open seconds but I grew them I. Lost here here actually. Was a Hoxton fan but he has to be pushed up in the middle or even in carried on the in the back like well he can but we're here older and as well right. Yeah. But rather what you know you have gone a bit cold your bed just to see the whole lot shall to take bolder I think I mean even just explain to me don't publish me at all meant is no I'll always be going to the deal but if I walk up one day in my public just comfort and I get. No phone or overnight I mean I would have all of them in a slightly as. You know but let me go are you for a not so I can understand a full it go it or the. The cradle as you know the great truck kept off the number one spot. Huge. Scottish guy who fronted the bond the end well done it was by 002 Vox out of all this could only get to number 20 because George. Said I want to tell you Nashton somewhere no. I don't join don't judge I don't know anything. You the mean button off and Kevin Webster's we boy to lose a leg in the corner to get back to not believe we are that he does but anyway it was chocolate sauce it used that was partly out for the court thought they knew of course it was for them black and white and it was something a bit of black and white felt warm and the chocolate sauce that made it look up so it was sport on such likely that you know I've got one which member of that oil thought is the only member of the royal family to play in and I think playing. He was right you're dependent right whole time so basically it is 1210 percent of the way I'll go on my day off and my charming boyfriend has guilt tripped me to come over and what was on his cruelly old job not only he's money the old stale radio so that last thing to you through has fallen. To the point I know untrusted and the old fellow. I just want my bad I have a good one and I'll be cast at the end oh just this one so bad. I Can he read between the lines of He's. There he's really naive with these things Charlie and I . Often know that Norbit quote no go no really strange just. Tally with the pot and formation Oh my Charlie and I are listening and the only much we haven't traced to done today as indeed was Goldwater else hopefully pumping Edinburgh school student I see that sometimes I really am going to really going to like the rugby funds I'm Just because we wore them a device might have a yeah I just thought they would from within their watch I mean sure Hunter would need but did you get rugby key if you like I mean what's the international style Good for you thanks so much for your pole you're so can you watch rugby see and I suppose but never been terribly much right right so very much an armchair. I would say enthusiasts I do know of people who go see the Glasgow Warriors and stuff and they get a team Israel like I do think these are quite good that's meant to say about it and maybe hide any of it all we had a top Scottish rugby dude guest on the show and it was it was always looting ours it was going to get tones and it was almost looming artist I mean surely says if you go and score stone from one of these games will enjoy the social side of it all is obsolete but we just are still allowed to drink they aren't you know trying to the US or sort sea food outlets are much much better we're told than you'd get at a football or football ground as a whole experience but maybe that's one of the things people could wish for for the New Years wish for Scottish football to get up there and know potentially Keith I don't know if you know I mean we. Can you know almost all Edinburgh and they are you go up to Aberdeen watch all the games no any more east of a season ticket when we were right rotten. And Roy can. Scrape all kind of stuff but because there's been an ongoing thing the off the ball was not all been fun seeing the real heavy complaints of a key element but order forcing it really really not befitting of a club Joyce folk and I remember from Riverside did she not work in the PI stand to talk to one of us this is your neck and. Is that we waifs of the sacred tree that makes the cakes and all that can stuff and I met this lovely old guy and he was a comic fan and I would say to him he was just you know he. Wanted to he just came out with this classic just like to me and he went close that they are. Like right there's untraditional new music and movie that's one lame duck as well. The failed dicto not last year of the old Remember tell me absolutely the song for some reason I have no interest in football but I very much enjoyed the chart on off the ball Hosh Tiger radio and kitchen and outs Madea Lawson hall in Mali as well the stock in the 16th century Dobby as an opium of Spain from what i Books to date mention some one stone Ah well stability that you ask of forced the it's. Yeah these bond know something soon there was a suggestion I would see horses for courses I would actually see that said one of the best of what I was from and one thank you very much for a lot and the Don surveille Sion. Original version of the Northern Lights of Dean still bring back horrendous memories of a sob the shaft and the petard ribeye about 20 years ago I did not know there was a dance version of the Northern Lights. And I actually not just said not for. The northern lights of Aberdeen can govern me goosebumps as well as I could think as we were doing off Sade on the telly and I don't know if you are involved or not but take a lot sure you are not there is we don't know why sure yes we did and we go for Dunkin she who is one of the guests a kind of mean White came of it but it was a huge studio audience and the C.E.O. Of the call you know and he get the whole audience he conducted them in a chorus of the Northern Lights and it was up so a beautiful moment beautiful what he did to end up in Aberdeen fine anyway if for making and these things I was about 978 when he got beat by Rangers in the Scottish Cup final 2 on I thought one about be my team and why and it stuck after I was with my brothers in Aberdeen fattened he was our number one fan because a great step from Santa not was just. So nice a good enough reason had been a lot of casual Scottish football funds who would have bought an old concept album in of course in 1983 then I'm guessing the whole nation would have been cheering for Dean or going all the way it works and score on the last 7 for the Rangers when the final witness Celtic were for you know when a CIO but I would imagine one offender can come in one when I'll but didn't play in Real Madrid and gotten Bogen 183 was the whole of Scotland behind thank you must have been if you will have it or not. You know when you're probably exaggerated I feel not quite almost maybe a pox on eyes and is enough to suggest oil but the me almost to be cuddly toy of Scottish football get into a fight you know and on the family also any to the way but would do would have been for maybe a lot see Celtic Rangers fans because you know opportunity. Up for a number of years would have been sent in just fungible clean for Real Madrid like to do you know the Polish probably as a Pollyanna there wasn't we need a song to play as it loads of stuff still came in and Keith is still drawing furiously how many of you don't know Keith 11. It say was your wife I was given me a list of problems he was off you don't get that whether or not a paper exactly exactly will tell you what is the one that you're going to pull in a time to sell draw on and in the studio picture and at the. The school there I inject scope when that's all I know when I suppose you don't yes they can they've signed with an N.D.B. All done to really make. About me out of inspiration 15 minutes on the clock and that means we will see the end of the scout and the funniest the 50 minutes on the clock and it is ring just worn Celtic now and all these lovely people have been seen you don't care about football go on with a sure because to me what Russ can put a name off the shore we do need a song it clears it out before dark Come on Eileen. But we're actually looking for a song for that we can dedicate. Some thoughts are not just seen for get music just let's go straight to physical violence because we're looking for a song for clique Levine I can us right and I'm going to even award the board this point maybe even send me off the ball mug eyeing a safari stream of old one to a song dedicated to 2 people to play as it's so famed you can get a song what it's for click living and dead of a kindness so. By a Jew or oh that was an off the wall mug so basically that had. A lot of childish crap who fall into he for being or good she said and he actually for me to. Be been born small constantly and not sure your kids has been but I wouldn't value from money even kleagle of things biggest enemies must go Joy at my all the guy he's sporting these mind the whole season he's no government to some but I thought you just can write and say that is an argument for all sorts of dong's we know when and we don't end in Roger's No of course Derek McKenna spent corn on my deck you know that's when I thought. I mean it's quite to the top it's not only the manager of hot or mad will be called he's knocked over a ton of football he's not you know he's not. Seeing your possession the club but you reckon at the should just sort of fashion week gallantly squiggle that's what last name I've got it with a lot of my things I get also a la football I don't know how but somebody just asked the question Who do you think when the square go there it mechanically clean and we ended up chatting methodology and right and you know if he does well my friend from Paisley reckons that cause that extend Paisley he would up slightly when by well he can promise it with a blade on a morning well. Anything to emulate whereas I think Nick Levine You know obviously the previous week in Paul given that you know no one who I think you know what I pay per view $1.00 or voluntarily I would put my money into my big living not be pulling back somewhat given that is the heart isn't totally. And therefore it's going to be. Like a canvas needs are born and crushed by. Good luck. Good luck. It's. 2 just plain old B.B.C. Radio shop the song Still to come from Lady Gaga electronic Ariana Grande I as well I miss from Scissor Sisters big. 10 of the millennium. Long long time ago I still lead. Player Saturday nights OK and. You wouldn't listen to this. The premise of Saturday nights is simple it's music to make. The radio for the players we should move came from 6 to like on the B.B.C. Radio structure it's the soundtrack to supplement the live and easy to make she said on the radio call me baby. Sure. Lady Gaga always remember us this way on B.B.C. Radio structure now I'm joined by Peter red shoes a baritone from North Russia and his pianist Marty good evening gentlemen hello good evening now Peter welcome back 1st of all pleasure to be back now you came in you came in before your gig in which a big homecoming concert so yeah that was on the one side the 20th of October Yes And we're back again tonight because tomorrow evening we've got a brand new concert which Martin Bussy is conducting and it's the very festive Handel's Messiah why so we're also inviting Martins choir down which is the Chester boxing is and then we're also getting an orchestra as well the rock orchestra which are called the 18th century Sinfonia as well as for my friends who I went to university with in Manchester and also in my friends from Chester are coming down to the solo so I'm I'm very excited about that. More to tell you about your choir What's what's the choir you bring down they are the best of boxing those which is a group of about 40 singers I met a choir but they are a very high standard I've done them conducted them for over 30 years actually while . Almost without noticing that it's. Their great group and Mazhar is one of their specialties so how good can you get and how much of choir to be the answer that is come and hear it tomorrow night they are very good because they all work terribly hard there are some very good musicians in it. And some very experienced singers one or 2 who are music teachers and things you know quite a lot of people who sang at a very high level when they were university and stuff like that and then they've carried on doing it but they're actually doctors and scientists it's quite old because most of the men tend to be scientists really and for some reason I don't know why. But they commit themselves every Wednesday and you know they're all there if you Wednesday by and large and we work very hard for a couple of hours and for some people it's their distress time I know we've got a doctor who always tells me it's her distress time week so what else do you do as a jobbing pianist and conductor this is something there that I do you know I taught for a long time the music school teachers in Manchester which was a great place to be and I now freelance as not very much as a pianist Actually this is a rare appearance specially for radio shop my things on the keys in public. Conducting I used to do a lot of scene myself I teach singing a bit much to university and I also now spend a lot of time composing So that's my sort of a big thing and you compose to come commissions I do when somebody wants to commission me yes yeah I do and I've been lucky enough to do several And I've got one coming out for 2021 which seems a very long time away but actually by the time it's all got sorted start to write it it will soon be with us so yeah and I had a commission last year which we did actually in Ludlow that structure. This April this year which was a piece about the Dublin Easter Rising and was sung by 2 Irish singers. At an event called English song weekend. Your shows could be tagged with a Little Help From My Friends because it is very much a case of pulling the strings of your contacts you know in a lot of ways is that how this sort of thing but tends to work I mean yeah I mean it's also a case of who you know and also obviously what you know but you know I like to keep in touch of with a lot of my friends as well and also like we work together and as well as like you know go to the public and stuff but it's it's great because you know you get to know how you know how everybody works as well and might because so we'll for instance the tanner invites me to sing opera garlands who did one in September and we do want to get in January and so I think it's nice because you can trust each other to be great on the night and likewise with the other 2 so it was Lucy and Charlie Travers. Really and specially Lucy is a very close friend and also friend of Martin's as well and it's it's nice because I just I can't wait to hear it because she's she's she's just been well she's now different universities and I haven't heard her sing for ages now and I really can't wait to hear what must develop to constantly meet people who why are you in the environments you're in because you're still very much training aren't you and yeah that environment Salumi and I did and I didn't auditioned this afternoon for my next for my next level which is the artist diploma so fingers crossed about that how did it what was that like was it stand in front you know a completely white room with a not for sale it was actually we want to get my university because that was a place I want to go and. We walked on to the theatre this is a 400 seat theater and then you just they're sitting in the trees in the stall so call the 3 of them so you've got the head of the head of vocal studies in the deputy head of focus that he's your period it's and then they've got the curtain down as well with these quite intimidating blue lights yeah and a spotlight as well and you see oh so you walk on and you're like oh my goodness the operatic Expo. Absolutely yeah and then and then you just you know just single I sang 3 Arias and then had had an interview but it's I don't know I just I just really enjoyed making music really I don't usually say I enjoy auditions but I quite enjoy today so thank you the good side I would yeah it is I mean like the thing is about one dish and so is you don't know what they're looking for and also there's hundreds of people that apply for very few spaces. Especially on the opera course as well there's about I think there's 2 places for baritones and I I noticed at least another 8 or 9 names who are also verities that was just today who are dishing but it also is whether you fit the operas that they've got coming up or whether the productions as that they really suit united your voices blend with the other people who are there at the moment who's your double as well because they double cast everything OK you know they have to think they have to think wider than you than 1 May think so it's not just on how good you sound on the day you might be the best singer but if you don't match with everybody else that can be I can be one of the one of the factors you know that is that for a qualification or is it part of a program Yeah so the thing is so like. So I will I will complete my masters or being well in about May this next year and then this is the artist the Pomus that's the next the next stage on top but then you get to work very closely with people from like English National Opera the Royal Opera House. English Touring opera and because you're working with those directors and also the coaches as well from those specific opera houses they can sometimes. Take you for jobs as well which is great so it's basically a way to get into the jobs without having to go into the you know a lot more auditions and is this the final stage that you can go through in in an educational So you know more yeah I mean you don't need to do it but it's just it helps you know it's like you know everyone. Guidance in their life because it's a fully fully funded course as well which is which is great means that you're getting this education this wonderful education and your You're just really making a your mark on all the productions that you do so I mean you can do one on top of that as well that's the National Opera studio but. Yeah it's a lot of training singers actually train about the same amount of time as a doctor which people don't actually realize in this is in university and you do unfortunately this is one of the cases is you do need that amount of training because sometimes all edition companies are companies I mean look at your C.V. And if they don't see that you've been and done a masters they just won't even look at you right which is a shame but you know I want to be one of the top artists so I want to be doing stuff in nationally and even internationally as well and I'm starting to get links at this moment time these things will come hopefully in the next few years how well do you again 24 and when did you last time you said you're voice what mature for quite a while yeah I think your voice I mean is maturing all the time but I know I'm learning I had a singing lesson before the auditions at M.I.T. It was like why are you doing that making thing so much out of yourself do this and do that and that. That was about 30 minutes before the audition as well helpful but you know it was very artful actually. But I'm pretty good on the question of that is so you've got how many more years but yeah I mean it depends on the type of voice as well so my voice broke at about 30 so my voice will mature in inverted commas a lot quicker than say somebody is voice to mature broken 18 right I think your peak is about they say 28 to about 32 OK and then your voice stays level until you're about 40 and then it gets very dark which is when you can do all the the oh man roles so you can divide as well because it's just you've got that foundation. Sounding of your voice you have to manage the change in your voice can you do anything to affect it or is it purely natural thing a lot of it is natural that you can help it along for instance one of the technical things I do wrong is I my time is too high at the back so I can strip the sound which means when I'm in a theater for instance the sound sounds a lot bigger to me but when you're sitting at the back you can't hear it so it's really interesting. How do you consciously. Drop your tongue lower. There is I was trying to think about it today during the during the arias as I need to just drop it there I think becoming aware of it and just feeling the sensation. When it's right I've just tried to do it and I have just discovered I have no control over the back of my. Control don't you think Apparently it's something I mean I only heard about it my teacher going on about of the last couple weeks I need to like yeah look in a mirror most of the time right and yeah work on it that way so these are well we remember last time that you came in and it is such a physical discipline the way you sing in particular it is very physical it's it's amazing but your your training your body seemingly as much as the tongues of muscle I guess isn't it it is yeah you do have to be relatively fit to do it actually because you're doing especially if you're going around and doing lots of concerts as well you've got to keep yourself quite energized as well making sure you're your best to your ability every time you don't want to about audition and likewise you don't want to buy performance so what point do you get to start the weight on which is the main perk of being an opera singer sure so you do it right OK I mean I don't I quite like my figure I'm. Nuns in quite a lot you know I'm it is I'm out there you know it keeps me in shape but I don't know it's helps I think it's over me whole so not like I always tell myself this anyway especially if I go to the gym which is you don't want to 6 pack because I wrote because I actually constrict your muscles you need to let them you need to let them just have a bit of looseness really you know it's all right you know doing workouts and leg workouts fine say OK just you can have that extra part absolutely fantastic So remind us where you are tomorrow and so we're in my local church which is since Altman's church in which is just the top of the high street it's at half past 7 when the concert begins and Doors open at half past 6. And tickets are 12 pounds on the door and it's going to be it's going to be great we've sold quite a lot of tickets still a lot of ale on the door as well but we're very very excited about it we'll chat a bit more about what you've got lined up but normally I get you to sing frankly a couple of songs in a very uncomfortable environment which. I will again ask you to what have you got for that's fine but we thought we go a bit lighter OK today so last time I brought some. German leads although it was an Italian and then an English song by Michael Hecht was this year we thought this time of them we thought we'd bring some musical theater OK and a folk song so we're going to start off with a piece and Les Miserables which is by Schoenberg and the piece I'm going to sing is stars and it's basically I'm. Trying to catch this convict you know the great thing about this is nobody who ever sings this again will be worse than Russell Crowe. In the film so you almost get a free ride so we'll see you know I mean in 3 minutes time and I regret saying that but. Yeah it's a great peace love it and one of my friends actually is currently doing this on the on the national toys as these do in Marius a it's a piece that I just love it it's great lovely in your own time absolutely. And a wonderful keyboard in here as well so let's hope we can get the sound right. 2 2 the. Old one was. On. Order from. Florida from. Clause a minor in the. Line of us charging. Me from the state. To require me spend. On high end is the way of the Lotus Oh it's one of the blot on the model all the. Odds that it woken and a very old and alone or with your mom by the. Way that was slow to. Warm. With the run. On This is the. High $100.00 small old thing watching the men off. She being watched and on. Oh. Oh oh my. He may be going to blow. Was. Funny so was. Oh we will meet. Oh absolutely stunning a lot you catch your breath and we'll chat more shortly absolutely brilliant. From what you pay and i sed as well more from them coming up after this from electronic . Key They just say when. Us. See us. You can just hear us. Get away with it. And the piano as well and. That was musical theater that was Les Miserables Yeah is that a crossover there is yeah I mean there's I thought you're going to US I question actually yeah I mean I was going to say you know a bit snobby about music. I really like specially that piece really really like that and it's Simon auditions before as one of. Performances as well. But I think I think. It's difficult to go from musical theater to opera rather than go from opportunities call theater that's what I heard anyway can I show my friends where. Graduates from from the Royal College of Music went from there to do Phantom Of The Opera which is a musical you know it's quite funny when you ask people the favor of theories and they asked and they said that is that a proper opera no no that's not at all and then and yes one of them was Christine as well she's I think she might still be there actually and then one of my friends as well and he saw it was on The Voice and she does cross over as well so OK you know and the Katherine Jenkins style piece as well but I think yeah I mean I don't see a huge problem. In the universe listing like that over there because of how we offer that but the purist but I just I think you just do what you really enjoy as well and if you want to make music just in your own certain way I'm sure Martin for you have different views on that well I'll tell you why I don't actually doesn't it doesn't worry me at all but when I was in your position training as a singer you you wouldn't have done something from a musical why because it would be received because it was a long time ago because in in like the early eighties there was that divide that you were saying you know the people were snobby about it yeah. And I think probably I was too I'm still very rude about some of the musical things but not just because of the legal But you know I'm a fan now of musicals perhaps from longer ago like Rodgers and Hammerstein so. I think. You appreciate. When they're a bit further away. And I think that sing is now much much more flexible Yeah I mean I was talking to people the other day about on the remembrance thing from there of all I heard of Bruce who won. Amazing Grace Yeah and I just think it's one of the best clips of singing I've seen for a long time but that was it was you know so because what we now so exposed to you mention Katherine Jenkins and Brant fall is another one and and the sort of pop opera if that's the right sort of phrase is that a good thing do you think I think it depends on the audience as well because if. I try in front of for instance like every concert I go to I always look at which demographic where we're performing to so if I go in and do a lot of hardcore other Schoenberg or Stravinsky or Brahms. They're just going to appreciate it but they're not going to enjoy it. So but I I really enjoy it when I'm singing for instance befalling I love seeing how it makes other people happy and also because some some pieces for instance when we're going to go on to a tiny boy it's a piece it like it really hits home with some people you don't realize that everyone knows it is absolutely he had no pressure of absolutely. But I just I just you got to do it for the love like other wires to do the job you know and how important is recognition because in opera as in classical music if you're not an enthusiastic. I would say you know the hits. Everybody's probably got a classical music compilation with a bit of Mozart and Beethoven and frankly you know do you ever get calls from the audience do Nessun Dorma I mean I do that's not my voice type Unfortunately I have some of they went through it and those went and he wrote them baritone Yeah I have sung it in a concert once but we transpose it to many keys. May as well because it featured on and I have it which is I just called Yes. And. That's I get asked to sing that quite a lot as well. But the thing is the main problem is if people ask I love to take audience requests it's just the music when we bring it that's the problem you know it's like going to a pianist and the and the saying It's not like a band where they may potentially know that song we may or may not and it takes a lot longer for us to train to learn a song to the detail on the level that we do. Although that is helped by the use of what we're using now as an i Pad because you can. You can actually just gone lie on your phone for instance down at the score and send it across but yeah you don't want to you want to do it just to make them make people happy but you know and there are there are cross-over others so I remember I mean I talk about Nessun Dorma and the World Cup It's so synonym and yeah or at lest when the league and Andrea Bocelli get on the pitch it was wonderful Yeah it does opera need more of that I don't mean I think so yeah I think it needs to try and go to the wider market but I mean like there's so in for instance the opera Garbo that we did in October I tried to make that really accessible to everybody so for instance I brought down a Segway and I also put on a Harley Quinn suit which I'm just going to grab the photo of OK this is interesting and that's not how I performed it while I rode up the aisle on a Segway at about yeah 10 kilometers an hour or so and having been on one of those . That's not easy no it's not your pride let alone sing the same time Exactly so the thing is like it was just just putting a bit of a bit of humor into it why nobody was mean I had a great time and that everybody else did as well because they were just we just you're not taking it seriously green Harlequin suit and the yellow was it was something I don't only. Know probably for good reason I don't Martin now just crying inside look what's happened to opera. This is the future you know it's not it's great it's great but those sort of community concerts which I guess is what they are I suppose you know make making it accessible but still stay staying truthful to what you do you know it's a balancing act isn't it and he has pressure on a Segway it's a balancing act. But it's yeah exactly I mean we tend with the program that we did we got a few pieces that people didn't know but we tried to introduce them to pieces and check and how many Russian this year how the language is coming on by the way we're going OK doubling in Russian Last time I did yeah I'm still I'm doing a bit more of that right well and then next I taking courses in Italian German because I need to get fluent in German so that's going to be fun you know my use some apps on the phone as well and how that goes but it's yeah it's good it's just getting the time to do it to be honest. But although I actually Italian next term so I'm doing 3. To operas next term. But they're both the same opera but different roles in Italian so I'm going to know very well at the end why . Make my time in a lot better because I'll be able to well be speaking the text as well as singing it so what easier these sort of. What people would would recognize more as a concert a gig yet or performing in an opera because some of them are quite long and grueling are they I guess to play or do you agree I mean you know we did it we just did the Marriage of Figaro the other college and it went on for 3 hours and 40 minutes and we were on I was on in the 1st scene and on the last scene and you've got to keep You've got to keep your energy up for that again I'll show you another photo for that for this one I was playing Antonio and then it took an hour and a half to put the costume on and the makeup and the make I mean well look like a 80 year old pirate absolutely when I was playing the I was playing the gardener so I'm like their take off and he was just like he fell on top of my hydrangeas. Which sounds so much better it's not in English Exactly so it's yeah I mean that there was quite fun but. That was very traditional very traditional performance they had certified as well and it was very much attended by the hardcore fans it was sold out actually but mainly to hardcore fans but the thing is like that's one thing I'm trying to do especially with the Messiah concert tomorrow is bring these concerts such a high level as well tomorrow's concert going to be a very. High quality concert. And we're trying to make it accessible by making the ticket price quite low I think 12 pounds especially how much the concert is costing to put on and I'm also helping fund that as well because I've had some great help funding my education so it's only right through to give it back absolutely you know because you know we all talk about doing it in the views and or decisions for instance and I think it's actually you need to do it also like which has been a great community they've they've helped me with my career so like I think it's great that we're able to bring these concerts and matters been wonderful as well because he's. He's given his time to to work the choir as well and and also come on tonight and we've got and also the records of the orchestra and some soloists and. It's going to be fantastic you know I am a lot but it's yeah I think that which deserves it they need it to have these high quality music concerts and that the ticket sales that we've had also just they prove that people they want to come they're really excited about it so what we what's the content like the people who are I think you come into MARTIN You're probably best to isolate them hello is Chorus Oh yeah cause I mean that well I mean that's a piece that everybody you know from Masonic Hall would recognize but I you know it's really interesting because that's obviously I'm not old Peter and he's talking about sort of community concerts and going to community and I mean I can remember the time when everybody did Messiah at Christmas and you know it was it was a community thing that people went to and a lot of people still do it at Christmas but I think a lot of people who don't know that much about it and it's really good because it does actually go through the Christmas story so that the whole of the 1st hour tomorrow is just telling the Christmas story OK And then after the interval there is the rest of Messiah which tells more of the story and ends up pretty much ends up with I know of it I could probably hum along to parts of it I have no idea about that bring your school tomorrow to how you know how much I mean it is one of the most amazing pieces not least of all because Handel wrote it in about 3 weeks. Really yeah it's a hot so it's a holding this piece and he wrote it in about 3 weeks and he was going blind and it just has so many pieces. So the pieces as well as courses you know some people would think oh I don't know this and your play a bit of sound I've heard that before or I've heard that before but he has a knack to tell the story in a really dramatic way because he was not composer so you get things like the angels telling the shepherds that the baby Jesus is going to be born and then they they this is chorus where you have the trumpets is all very exciting and you can imagine angels in the sky and then at the end it just gets quieter and quieter which is hands wives saying well they're going off in the distance Yeah and it's so simple but it's so good and people would do something much more sophisticated now but actually I think it works better than almost anything else for how much freedom do you have with it is as performers and I mean in ballet the steps are handed down for hundreds of years and they are the same can you. Tinker with it in any way Yes Yeah there are lots of things I mean no 2 singers will sing the solos so I mean I hope it's going to Peter's going to sing piece called The trumpet sure sounds to me and every bass sings that in a different why it doesn't look surprised so you're all right which is not a great piece because it's him in a trumpet but it's also there's a thing called Iona mentation as well due to our setting aside tomorrow not any huge amount fomentation in but it's the limitation is where you just basically put some virtual sick quavers and things on the piece and even more fantastic you know and like every single thing it does that different me from what they've heard or whether one of the chord structure is just tight with their enjoyment as well say yeah there's a few surprises that definitely come out tomorrow again that's a balance isn't it you know you want to make it sound great without singing like without seem like a diva doing the American national anthem I mean it's a play. We'll see we'll see how it's how it's more over you know what's what's the church like acoustics wise is it pretty good I think so I mean as a solo singer I've sang in there for just I actually go into rehearsal usually when I'm when I'm. At home because you can get quite a few visitors in but there's a piano in the side and it's you know I just can have a little play around it's great and the acoustics are really good especially because you've got a full orchestra a chamber auction I mean as well and I think it's just going to be I think it's going to fill the room my advice is don't sit right at the front sit about 5 or 6 rows back and say as if it's like a starting point and why because it's just because you get the blend of sound if I think about a choir and then the orchestra and then you've got the soloists who will be on the right or the left and it just means you'll be able to hear a lot more of the orchestra lens as it travels up so it does. Probably agree with me on that you know it does actually. We went into practice on Tuesday night and it sounds fantastic 5 sounds fantastic in that but I was really notice that as I walked back down the church to listen to them it just changed the law but it's a wonderful church I've been waiting to do something in there for years so it's a great opportunity to take a choir to sing in because some buildings just make you want to sing in them more than others and this is one of them so it's an ominous some 30 tomorrow night. While shortage not by a lot of pounds after 7 until it will only go on to about quarter to 10 as well in case because people hear Messiah and they think it's really long Bring a blanket. Cutting some of the parts that don't contain a Christmas story as well but it still is going to be a wonderful concept. Wonderful well sing us out with something and I shall be able to speak to you again so we're not going to sing anything from the Messiah because we're going to be safe after most poilus Absolutely but I'm going to sing a very well known piece which is called Londonderry and we're going to sing to the words of Danny boy that you don't know Irish or based on a traditional IRA Irish folks.
