"Electromagnetic Design and Analysis of a Magnetic Plug for Next Genera" by Mahbubur Rahman Kiran, Omar Farrok et al.

At present, most of the electric vehicle transfers electrical power to grid or other vehicles by electrical conduction. Recently a novel concept of transferring electrical power through a universal magnetic plug has been proposed where the electromagnetic design of the magnetic plug is the key to optimize the system performance and is a multiphysics problem. In this paper, a systematic approach is presented to design and analyze the magnetic plug to push the technology further. Advanced soft magnetic material based different toroidal shape cores are considered. Initially plug size is selected considering power transfer capability, core saturation, core loss, and power quality. By analyzing the simulation results with ANSYS/Ansoft software, the optimum toroidal core is finally selected. Electric vehicles (EV) are increasingly connected to the power grid using the charging connectors based on the charging connector standards, such as SAE J1772, SAE Combo, or CHAdeMO, which are mainly intended for single directional charging for grid-to-vehicle (G2V) application. However, with the development of a smart grid, EVs should play a role as active distributed resources, that can transfer their energy into the grid and can charge or be charged by another EV. Therefore, the concept of Vehicle-to-X (V2X), where X can be the grid, the local load, or another EV, has been proposed. Unfortunately, the current standard of the charging connector does not support all possible connections of the V2X.
