Print Four Montecito High School students and one Ramona High student won Gold Medals last month in the SkillsUSA state competition and will advance to the SkillsUSA national competition being held virtually June 14-18. The Montecito students won their awards April 17 in the construction division, with Gold Awards going to students in the high school’s Teamworks, Individual Carpentry categories. Decision Day event recognizes EBCI high school seniors      The 1st Annual Decision Day event, honoring Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) high school seniors, was held at the Cherokee Indian Fairgrounds on the evening of Thursday, May 13.  The event recognized the post-high school choices of the seniors and was sponsored by the WCU Cherokee Center and the EBCI Higher Education and Training Program. “This is the official first annual EBCI Decision Day celebration with, hopefully, many more to come,” Sky Sampson, WCU Cherokee Center director, said to open Thursday’s event.  �...

Bogi Lateiner and Shawnda Williams run the Girl Gang Garage in Phoenix. At Girl Gang Garage in the middle of the shop there’s a 1961 Volvo PV544. It’s a funky little car with a curvy, cartoonish design, but it doesn’t look like much of anything right now. It’s stripped down to bare metal in the early stages of a complete restoration. Jana Warnke is working on smoothing out the surfaces around the passenger side door. She hasn’t done much body work like this before, but she’s a former salon owner and nail technician so the filing tools she’s using feel surprisingly familiar.
