An 82-year-old man has died after the ATV he was driving broke through thin ice on Pike Bay in northern Minnesota Friday.
Law enforcement and resort operators met on Wednesday to discuss ice safety concerns and identify a team to monitor conditions following several rescues on Upper Red Lake.
Kudos to the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office for making the decision to keep motorized vehicles off the unstable ice of the big northern Minnesota lake.
One resort said revenue is down 85%, but they rather everyone stay alive.
Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs said there is no timeline in mind. All motor-vehicle traffic is banned. Violators will be fined and billed for rescues.
