fbi director chris wray warning of an alarming increase in attacks on law enforcement amid a rise in domestic terrorism. our workforce has been battling the threat of terrorism and every other threat we face right through the teeth of a pandemic and rising danger to their own safety. and i say that because over the past year, we have seen a sharp and deeply disturbing uptick in violence against the law enforcement community. director wray saying that that increase includes 52 law enforcement officers being murdered on the job in the first eight months of this year. 52 murdered. one every five days. and more than in all of 2020. out front now, u.s. capitol police chief, tom manger. and i appreciate your time, chief. thank you very much. you know, when we hear these numbers, 52 law enforcement officers being murdered so far this year. um, and you know, one every five days and we look at that
characterization, and not mine, and in many cases they walked through a door held open by a capitol police officer. you know that is not my characterization, and we saw it with my own eyes, and i asked matt, were you here? did you watch what took place, and he said, no, he was in florida working on something else. and so i think it is important to note that while they are saying that they are here in support of the people that they feel were unjustly prosecuted of this rally as they call it or insurrection as it is known, that is not what we saw here with our very own eyes here as we covered it on the ground january 6th. so we will see what happens, and the capitol police, and the national guard is on standby if in fact something gets more volatile throughout the day. we will wait and see what happens. and carol, you have new reporting about the preparation, and the security preparations under way, and the u.s. capitol
the man told police he was on patrol and began talking to them about things pertaining to white supremacy. police said in their report they do not know if he was planning to attend upcoming demonstrations or if he has ties to previous cases in the area. this arrest comes as the city is already on high alert. a rally in support of those arrested for their roles in the capitol riot called justice for j6 is set to be held this saturday in washington, d.c. law enforcement is taking steps to make sure it doesn t turn into anything resembling another january 6th. earlier today u.s. capitol police chief tom manger held a security briefing at the capitol for house and senate leaders. here he is speaking to reporters after that briefing. just a brief about the demonstration that s scheduled for september 18th, just the intelligence information that we re aware of and a little bit about our operational plan, about what we plan to do. reporter: have you requested that the fencing go up? yes
like, and how it will get people revved up, not just in washington but around the country. we have a serious problem here, and i think law enforcement is focusing on it now. back to the security lapses that happened on january 6th, the capitol police union says senior leaders need to be had held accountable saying if our leaders had done their job, there would have been no breach of the capitol that day. end quote. do you think the right people have been held accountable? listen, i don t have the investigative file but anyone should held accountable if through their actions it caused a break down and what you saw on january 6th. clearly they aren t prepared. so there were break downs in leadership, there were break downs in intelligence and communications. there was a break down in the capitol police board who has to approve these actions. you have a different board that tom manager is working with.
extremists feel very comfortable coming out in the open. and the rally this weekend is meant to celebrate the insurrectionists. the u.s. capitol police chief, tom manager said today that a fence will go up around the capitol a day or two before this rally. it hopefully will come down after. will that be enough? capitol will be fine. it makes a lot of tense to put the fencing up. cops should not have to be in fan to fan combat. that doesn t mean the issues and problems will suddenly go away. the topic of the rally itself, calling the january 6th insurrection as somehow their martyrs, these are terrorists, that s what they are, but now they re being treated that way. imagine what speeches will sound
