(LEARFIELD) – After cancelling last year’s event because of the pandemic, the American Family Insurance Championship is coming back to University Ridge Golf Course June 11-13, and there was big news Monday during a virtual media day.
First, the AmFam Championship has been upgraded to an invitation format, and the 81-player field for the PGA Tour Champions even twill include Wisconsin native and 2-time U-S Open champion Andy North, who’s served as a tournament ambassador since the AmFam’s inception in 2016.
The 71-year old North has played only 19 PGA Tour Champions Tournaments the last 10 years. His last event was the 2019 Bass Pro Legends of Golf.

Since 2012, when Dallas Seavey became the youngest winner of the Iditarod sled dog race, he’s been bombarded by “if” he could get five titles, the most ever by a musher.
“I think it was probably 10 minutes after I won that first race that somebody mentioned five,” he said before this year’s race. “At that point, I said I got to worry about No. 2 first. I may be home-schooled, but I know that much, two comes after one.”
Now 34 and possibly the sport’s greatest champion, Seavey on Monday collected his fifth Iditarod title, winning the pandemic-shortened race by more than three hours over second-place musher Aaron Burmeister.

When Tiger Woods arrived in our collective, national consciousness somewhere around the second weekend of April 1997, he might as well have brought all his furniture, pets and preferred window treatments with him. This was not going to be a brief or casual visit.
A transcendent golfer occupies our head space like no other athlete, thanks to the unadorned intimacy and longevity afforded by the sport. We stand mere feet away from them on the tee box. We grow old with them. We play their game, or a lesser, mortal version of it, squeezing in 18 holes on Sunday mornings before settling in for the great champion's final round.

Golfing legend Tiger Woods had a horrific vehicle crash Tuesday morning in California that could threaten his livelihood of ever playing golf again. Even if he never swings another golf club, he'll go down as one of the greatest who ever played the game.
There's a lifetime of memories for fans to reflect upon with Woods, from his budding superstardom until his most recent setback. He has won 82 PGA tournament wins, which is most among any player in history. His 15 major championships only trails the 18 by Jack Nicklaus.

MELBOURNE, Australia — The trouble for Naomi Osaka at Grand Slam tournaments comes in Week 1. Get beyond that stage at the hard-court majors, though, and start preparing to etch her name on the trophy.
Osaka won her fourth title in her past eight appearances at a Slam, emerging from what initially was a tight Australian Open final and pulling away by grabbing six consecutive games to beat Jennifer Brady 6-4, 6-3 on Saturday.
With strong serving that produced six aces, Osaka improved to 4-0 in major finals, a feat achieved in the Open era by Monica Seles on her way to nine total championships and Roger Federer on his way to 20.

For most of her life, Brittney Cooper has watched tennis, bearing witness to the sport's brightest stars, from Monica Seles and John McEnroe to Venus Williams and Coco Gauff.
So when Serena Williams faced off Wednesday against Naomi Osaka, there was no doubt what Cooper would be doing: watching Williams, an all-time great, play bright young star Osaka. It was the next chapter in an exciting rivalry, one cemented by a controversial 2018 U.S. Open championship that Osaka won.

McIlroy looking for win, U.S. Open prep at Torrey Pines

Rory McIlroy is playing the Farmers Insurance Open for just the third time, looking for his first tour victory since 2019 while getting a feel for the course that will host the U.S. Open in June. With seven-time winner Tiger Woods missing one of his favorite tournaments due to his fifth back surgery, McIlroy and former Farmers winners Jon Rahm, Marc Leishman and Jason Day top the field at Torrey Pines. McIlroy finished third last year behind Leishman and Rahm, and tied for fifth with Rahm and Day in 2019.

The world's best tennis players have had an abrupt introduction to the world of hotel quarantine and isolation upon their arrival into Australia.
Of all the players set to compete in the first major of the season, 72 are now in hard quarantine after three of the 17 charter flights were impacted by positive COVID tests.
Some players have criticised the hard quarantine, saying they did not know that everyone on a flight would have to quarantine in the event of a positive test, although that has been contradicted by some other players.

Activist and champion Naomi Osaka is AP Female Athlete of Year

"Her activism has shone a light on how we as individuals and sports leagues can collectively make an impact,” WTA Chairman and CEO Steve Simon said.

idolized growing up? >> yeah. definitely. it was really crazy. really intense. really tough. but i just went out and played my game and did my best. and just tried to do as well as i could. and i came out with a win, so that was awesome. >> you've got the very big sum planned, sloane. tell us about the tournaments that we'll be see you in. >> so this summer i'm playing in the u.s. open series and it's five weeks of women's and men's tournaments. back-to-back finals. and today is the first day in the ten-year history that all of the tickets are going on sale for all tournaments and the u.s. open. wherever you live, come visit us in the closest city you can. we'll be in d.c., atlanta, winston-salem, everyone pretty much, carlsbad, san diego. and yaeeverywhere. visit usopenseries.com for tickets. >> you're 19 years old, doing so

they're doing just fine. >> i watched him that final day of the 2011 u.s. open at congressional country club not far from here. he creamed the competition and you saw this young guy just so sort of you could just, he's up and coming, but it's tough. he's so young and pressure makes people do some weird things. how much pressure is he understand? >> a tremendous amount. as you said, he had this tremendous year last year. really a prodigy. this irish kid. charming, working class family. great story. everybody loved him. o won a bunch of tournaments. world's number one ranking. that's a lot to suddenly change in your life. a lot of pressure to put on a kid that age and he's saying he's having some trouble adjusting. sports is a strange business, there's not a lot of other fields where you can be that young and be basically the head

prepared to really win his first major in five years. that means his next opportunity would be the u.s. open. maybe a little poetic book open. his last major win was at a u.s. open in very dramatic fashion. but unless he pulls out a miracle today we'll maybe be looking to the next major to see if tiger can get that one. >> who looks like they'll maybe clinch it over the next couple of hours if it is fair enough to take a stab at that? >> well, cabrera is obviously having a good round. he's won before. he's actually been in the final pairing 3 of the last 5 years so he's always a good bet. there's also three australians of the six golfers who are making up the final three pairings. that's something to watch as well. no australian has ever won this tournament which is pretty amazing considering all of the success australians have had in golf over the years. they've got british non-open titles but certainly can't seem to win here.

excuse me. tiger woods is back on top. he's reclaimed the number one spot in the world's golf rankings after winning the arnold palmer invitational in orlando. it's the third tournament win this year. and the first time he's been ranked number one since back in 2010. he says there is a simple explanation. >> i had to look at it. if i get healthy i know i can play this game at a high level. i know i can be where i'm contending in every event. contending in the major championships. and being consistent day in and day out. if i get healthy. >> bleacher report's andy scholes has more on that for us this morning. >> hey, soledad. you heard him say it right there if he got healthy he knew he could get back to playing at a high level. we've definitely seen that over the last few months. he's won six of his last 20 pga starts. he's already got three this year. but the thing everyone still wants to see tiger do is win that major. he hasn't won one since the u.s. open in 2008. the last time he won the

that coaches them, got them back on track. it seems like, hey, they'll make a movie about this at some point, aren't they? >> who knows? it sounds like a -- the school there in ft. myers not a bad place to study if you can study on the beach that kind of thing. we'll watch for them. how will they do against florida? >> this is the david versus goliath situation. the kids that go to the gulf coast, they don't even get a sniff at a scholarship with the florida gators. have to see if they can carry the magic over to north texas. >> i want to ask you, not necessarily a cinderella story, but tiger woods, he just won. he's back on top. is he back? >> well, you know, we thought he might have been back a little bit last year. and then he tailed off and now he's won three straight tournaments to start off the year. last time he did that was in 2008 when he won the u.s. open. so we're thinking he's back. oddsmakers in las vegas think he's back. he's a three to one favorite to win the masters. the next closest guy to that, rory mcilroy, he's ten to one.

it's not like the u.s. open where you anticipate rock hard greens, but the speed many of the golfers thought would be a lot faster. the first two days without the moisture on the greens was slow an we all saw the weather conditions on sunday, not favorable for the golfers and many anticipated fast greens and as you heard, the commentators talking about several times especially tiger, they just didn't believe that the greens would be as hard as they would. tiger had a very good four-round tournament but just wasn't to be and now the drought continues. nine years since his last major victory. he's still four behind the great jack nicklaus for the all-time lead. >> thank you very much, jared greenberg in atlanta. it was crazy. of course, tiger had that two-stroke penalty for the illegal drop. still -- >> to have sudden death and go to a second round has to be sort of record breaking. >> angel cabrera when he won in 2009 i believe won in a playoff and tiger woods won in a playoff

champion angel cabrera. also won the '07 u.s. open. cabrera cannot be ruled out. he is one tough competitor. going to be a thrilling final round here later sunday at the masters. well, less than 24 hours after suffering a season ending ruptured achilles' tendon, kobe bryant had successful surgery to repair the tendon. the injury occurred during friday night's game against the golden state warriors. all indications are the lakers star could be out for anywhere from six to nine months. that's your bleacher report. alison, back to you. >> all right, patrick snell, thank you. so, if sports aren't quite your thing, maybe this is. works by picasso are finding a new home in new york at the met. metropolitan museum. i want to show you why this billion dollar collection didn't cost a thing.

completely respectable tournament long score and finished ahead not only of a couple people playing over the weekend here, but think about the people who missed the cut that he finished in front of. simpson, last year's u.s. open winner. considered a huge victory, not just him, import himself so well, stand up to the pressure, make the cut, play well at augusta but opening up china to the government market and the pga tour. one of five people in this world are chinese but they don't play a lot of golf there. not as popular as other parts of asia. a push to try to get more golf clubs in the hands of more chinese, and they really feel that the way this kid handled himself will popularize the sport there maybe in way they have never seen before, and, in fact, fred, the most interesting thing i've heard over the past couple of days, the controversial with him getting that stroke off for slow play, actually could help the popularity of the game in china, because of the way he handled himself, and the way the perception was that they weren't

pencil in a 7, that's not very good. he went from tied to the lead to eighth leaving the door i'd open for woods. and lindsey vonn's man went old school were wince 78 full shy of the al time record. reserve your seat on the couch for father's day. it's going to be an exciting one at the u.s. open. if you had a bad weekend it probably wasn't as bad as this guy. it comes in as number four on bleacher report.com line up. tie tus young was arrested on friday marking the third time he found himself in handcuffs in the past week. young allegedly broke into a home, tried to outrun the cops, then got into an altercation of the police. this comes on the heels of suspicion of driving under the

revealed during fbi questioning before everything went awry. in the sports lead it was shaping up to be a pretty entertaining new chapter in the ongoing feud between tiger woods and sergio garcia. ascent tang entertaining as fen guys in polos and khakis can get but then the rivalry took a nasty turn. >> reporter: the long-time feud between tiger woods and sergio garcia reached a boiling point tuesday night when at an awards dinner in england the ceremony's host asked garcia if he might try to patch things up with woods by inviting him to dinner at the upcoming u.s. open. the 33-year-old spaniard answered, quote, we'll have him around every night. we will serve fried chicken. the incident quickly sparked outrage and within an hour garcia issued a statement calling his words, quote, a silly remark, but said in no way
