Transition of Lapu-Lapu City to Alert Level 1 backed

Department of Health (DOH)-Central Visayas chief pathologist and Visayas Vaccination Operations Office spokesperson Dr. Mary Jean Loreche. (File photo) CEBU CITY - The Visayas Vaccination Operations Center (VVOC) is confident that Lapu-Lapu City will be added to the two localities in Central Visayas placed under coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) Alert Level 1, a spokesperson said on Friday. Department of Health (DOH)-Central Visayas chief pathologist, Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, said Lapu-Lapu City was able to reconcile its vaccination data, pulling out names from other categories and transferred them to the A2 category for the national vaccine rollout. "Lapu-Lapu City was able to present its compliance to the fourth requirement before a locality can be allowed to transition to Alert Level 1, that is to inoculate 70 percent of the total population of elderlies," Loreche, also a VVOC spokesperson, told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) in an interview. The city pulled out data of individuals aged 60 and above and placed them under A2 category which eventually result in hitting the 73 percent total coverage for the seniors' inoculation. In the daily meetings with the national vaccination rollout, Loreche said she kept on questioning the discrepancy between the figures presented by the DOH-7 and the Local Vaccination Operations Centers (LVOV) which could be a reason why many of the localities remain under Alert Level 2 because their data on the senior citizen's inoculation would always appear as if they have not hit the minimum which is 70 percent coverage. "They have to coordinate with the NVOC (National Vaccination Operations Center) so that they can correct the figures and do the necessary adjustments and the possibility of de-escalation to Alert Level 1," she said. The National Task Force against Covid-19, through Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, pledged to look into the case of Lapu-Lapu City, after Mayor Junard Chan appealed during their "Bida Tungo sa New Normal Roadshow" on March 18 to place the island city under the lowest alert phase. Loreche is also hopeful that Mandaue City could reconcile its record and join with Cebu localities under Alert Level 1. As of March 16, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) placed Cebu City and Siquijor under Alert Level 1. Meanwhile, Loreche urged local government units to continue with the efforts to inoculate senior citizens despite the de-escalation of the alert level. "Yes even if they have reached that required coverage and allowed to transition to the lowest alert level, I would really recommend that they still need to look for seniors who are unvaccinated and to continue encouraging them to get their vaccine," she added. LGUs may extend 'Bayanihan, Bakunahan' until Friday: NTF

VAX TO THE MAX. Adults and teenagers queue up for Covid-19 vaccination at the multipurpose area of Barangay Kaligayahan in Novaliches, Quezon City on the last day of the "Bayanihan, Bakunahan" vaccination drive on Wednesday (Dec. 1, 2021). The government targets to administer 9 million Covid-19 vaccine doses during the three-day vaccination drive that began on November 29. (PNA photo by Oliver Marquez) MANILA - The country's national massive inoculation drive dubbed "Bayanihan, Bakunahan" will continue for two more days, the National Task Force (NTF) against Covid-19 announced Thursday. In an advisory, the NTF said various local government units (LGUs) have requested the National Vaccine Operations Center (NVOC) to extend the three-day Covid-19 vaccination drive as a "large" number of individuals are still flocking at the vaccination sites to get coronavirus vaccine. With this, the NTF allowed the LGUs to voluntarily extend their respective "Bayanihan, Bakunahan" drive until Friday. All the LGUs are requested to inform the Centers for Health Development if they wish to stretch their vaccination period that started on November 29. The Regional and Local Vaccination Operations Centers (RVOC), likewise, are directed to facilitate the augmentation of resources and provision of technical support. They are also tasked to ensure sufficient vaccine allocation and distribution of ancillary supplies for the LGUs. Meanwhile, the NVOC is yet to release the official tally of vaccine throughput during the three-day "Bayanihan, Bakunahan" vaccination event from Monday to Wednesday. The government aimed to administer 9 million doses of coronavirus vaccines in 8,000 inoculation sites nationwide. (PNA) }

Gov't to replace 148K vax doses lost in Zambo Sur fire

UP IN SMOKE. Fire hits the Provincial Health Office of Zamboanga del Sur in Pagadian City on Sunday night (Oct. 31, 2021). The National Task Force Against Covid-19 and other concerned agencies said they will replace the 148,678 doses of Covid-19 vaccines destroyed. (Photo courtesy of Victory Zamboanga del Sur) MANILA - The government will replenish the 148,678 doses of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccines that were destroyed in a fire that hit the Provincial Health Office of Zamboanga del Sur on Sunday night. In a joint statement issued Monday, the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID), National Task Force (NTF) Against Covid-19, National Vaccination Operations Centers (NVOC), and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said they are closely monitoring the investigation. "We are saddened that 148,678 doses of Covid-19 vaccines were damaged during the fire that broke out at the Provincial Health Office of Zamboanga del Sur on the evening of October 31," it read. All concerned agencies are on standby to provide immediate support to the Regional and Local Vaccination Operations Centers in the Zamboanga Peninsula, it added. "May this unfortunate incident be a reminder to all local government units to ensure the safety and security of these life-saving vaccines," it said. Responders are retrieving vaccines that may still be useful and other items like refrigerators, vaccine carriers, and transport boxes. The administration of jabs at the provincial and municipal levels is also rescheduled. "We would like to assure the residents of Zamboanga del Sur that the NTF and NVOC will replenish all the damaged vaccines, especially those meant for citizens who are scheduled to get their second dose soon. The vaccine doses will be shipped immediately as soon as the new cold storage is ready for use," the statement said. In an interview at the Laging Handa press briefing also on Monday, NVOC chair and DOH Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje, said they will also probe why the vaccines were still unused, a probable violation of a DILG order that all local government units (LGUs) must deploy and administer the jabs three days after receiving the supplies from the national government. "We will look into that and then see who are accountable," Cabotaje said. She said the regional office is already implementing its backup plan. "We are looking at how we will stock our cold chain equipment, if there are additional refrigerators that can be repositioned, additional freezers, and ultra-refrigerators," she added. Based on the NTF's initial report, the fire in Pagadian City destroyed 9,176 doses of AstraZeneca allocated as second shots, 14,400 Moderna to be used for pediatric vaccination, 88,938 Pfizer-BioNTech jabs, and 36,164 Sinovac vaccines, and those for routine immunization vaccines. The DILG and DOH called anew on LGUs to make sure their respective vaccine safety offices would "report 24/7 in all Covid-19 cold chain facilities and warehouses". "An intensified monitoring mechanism will be put in place to ensure that vaccines deployed from the national warehouse will be immediately distributed to implementing units across provinces, cities, and municipalities," the statement added.
