Vodafone Group and Qualcomm detailed plans to jointly develop reference designs for open RAN, promising a move which would boost the overall market for potential vendors.
The companies will focus on 5G, stating they plan to produce a reference design combining Vodafone’s network expertise with Qualcomm’s Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) solutions.
“Virtualised and open RAN offer a significant opportunity to make 5G networks more flexible and cost-efficient, transforming them into a platform for innovation”, said Dino Flore, VP of technology at Qualcomm Europe.
Santiago Tenorio, head of network architecture at Vodafone, added the collaboration would boost the chances for smaller vendors “to compete on the world stage”, bringing “greater supplier diversity” to the RAN equipment sector. ....

Aiming to lower the entry barrier for many companies and drive diversification of network equipment suppliers, Vodafone and Qualcomm Technologies have announced plans to join forces to develop the technical blueprint for more equipment suppliers to help build the 5G networks of the future, using Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) technology.
The partners said that currently, where two or more suppliers are used in a network, each one is deployed in a cluster, and the points at which they meet are often the most challenging in terms of performance. Vodafone UK continued its ambitions to pioneer efforts in open RAN, detailing plans to open what it claimed will be the nation’s first R&D facility devoted to the approach.
The operator’s OpenRAN Test and Validation Lab will be based in its Newbury campus and will initially employ 30 engineers, though Vodafone noted this number could grow as more partners come on board.
Chief network officer Andrea Dona said the company wants to spur the development of open RAN which was “still in its infancy”.
He added Vodafone aimed to avoid “a Catch-22 situation, where operators wait to buy perfect products, but the open RAN vendors need investment to perfect their products”. ....
