VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Families are struggling to put food on the table, and the pandemic is only exacerbating that challenge. That's why a special program in Virginia Beach is so important.
It's helping tens of thousands of students, and one of the volunteers is Karen McFatridge. For four years, she's been helping stuff bags with food going to kids in need in Virginia Beach. She believes it's important for her to take action this way.
"Because there are hungry children, and that just kills me," Karen said.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Beach School Board approved an $828.8 million operating budget Tuesday for Virginia Beach City Public Schools' (VBCPS) 2021-22 fiscal year.
Within the budget includes a 5% pay raise for all staff, which includes a 4.5% pay increase in cost-of-living adjustment and a .5% step increase for those reaching or below top of school system's pay scale.
"We believe the initiatives outlined in this plan are essential to providing VBCPS students and staff with the supports they need to succeed during the ongoing health pandemic and beyond," said Board Chairwoman Carolyn Rye.
The budget will provide funding to increase allowances for advanced degrees, to upgrade school counseling department chairs and to move all custodians up one pay grade.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Beach School Board met the evening of January 5th. COVID-19 issues were at the forefront, and there was discussion of a phased return of students.
The Virginia Beach City Public Schools system has announced that it will hold its Standards of Learning (SOL) testing in the classrooms starting as soon as Wednesday, January 6.
The district sent an e-mail to parents on January 4, reminding them of the testing and letting them know how to arrange bus transportation for their child.
The SOL testing will be for students in middle and high school. Parents can choose to have their children opt out; however, circumstances are different with high school students taking a course for credit. Parents are encouraged to check with their individual schools with any concerns.
