The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed Vedanta s Sterlite Industries in Tuticorin to run its closed oxygen plant amid surging Covid-19 cases in the country. The SC said the order has been passed in view of national need for oxygen.
A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, L Nageswara Rao and S Ravindra Bhat said Vedanta shall not be allowed to enter and operate its copper smelting plant under the garb of this order.

The Supreme Court has allowed Vedanta s Sterlite Industries in Tamil Nadu s Tuticorin to reopen its oxygen production plant. A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud on Tuesday said that allowing Vedanta to operate its oxygen plant would not create any equity in favour of company.
The court added that Vedanta shall not enter, operate copper smelting plant under garb of the latest order. The copper unit was sealed by the state government in May 2018, days after 13 agitators were killed in police firing during a violent anti-Sterlite protest in the southern district.
Synopsis As per the Supreme Court directive, power supply may be allowed for Vedanta s Sterlite Industries in Tuticorin for four months to repair and operate oxygen producing and related equipment only, the meeting resolved.
An all-party meeting convened by the Tamil Nadu government on Monday resolved to allow Vedanta s Sterlite Industries in Tuticorin to produce oxygen for a four-month period amid surging covid cases, paving the way for the partial reopening of the copper smelter closed in 2018 over pollution concerns. The unit was sealed by the state government in May 2018, days after 13 agitators were killed in police firing during a violent anti-Sterlite protest in the southern district.

The Tamil Nadu government on Monday allowed Vedanta s Sterlite Industries in Tuticorin to produce oxygen for four months. The decision was taken during an all-party meeting convened by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami, news agency PTI reported.
Sterlite s plant at Tuticorin has remained closed since May 2018 over pollution concerns.
People are dying due to lack of oxygen,the Supreme Court had said on April 23, asking why the Tamil Nadu government cannot take over the Sterlite copper unit for producing oxygen to treat COVID-19 patients.
